A toothache might not sound like the most compelling reason to down tools on The Block, particularly when there are rooms to finish, budgets to manage and Scott Cam watching your every move.
But according to Wyatt, his refusal to work wasn’t just because of a slightly sore tooth.
The Blockhead has revealed that one of his back molars had fractured vertically into his gum, leaving him in constant pain for several days before it eventually had to be removed.
That explanation may come as a surprise to viewers, who were considerably less sympathetic after watching Wyatt eat and head to the gym while complaining that his toothache was preventing him from working.
Some fans branded him “lazy”, a “big baby” and a “waste of space”, while others suggested he and Chantel should have left the competition altogether.
Wyatt explained to WHO exactly what happened and why a trip to the dentist ended with one less tooth and a very quick return to site.
What happened to Wyatt’s tooth on The Block?
Wyatt admitted he still isn’t entirely sure how the damage occurred.
“I don’t actually know anything about it. It just fractured deep down into my gum,” he told WHO.
“It’s my very last molar on my right-hand side. I was up with it for four to five days and it was just chronically hurting. No amount of painkillers would fix it.”
Wyatt believes he may have fractured the tooth while grinding his teeth in his sleep or biting into something hard, although there was no obvious moment when the damage happened.
“I started to get a random toothache and I went to the dentist,” he explained.
“They X-rayed it and said the crack was really minor, but it was vertical and went down into the gum. They didn’t know how low it went.”
Although the fracture appeared small, its location made treating it more complicated.
The dentist gave Wyatt two options: attempt to save the tooth with a costly crown that may only provide a temporary fix, or extract it completely.
With The Block schedule leaving little time for lengthy dental deliberations, Wyatt opted for the quickest solution.
“They said, ‘You can try and put a crown on it, but we can’t guarantee it will fix it. It’ll probably just be super temporary and it’ll be super expensive. Or we can just extract it,'” he recalled.
“So I was like, ‘All right, I need to get back to work, so whatever is easiest and quickest.'”
The tooth was pulled, the area was cleaned and Wyatt returned to the construction site.
He also kept the extracted molar, because apparently surviving The Block with your renovation and dignity intact isn’t enough. Sometimes you need a souvenir too.
The Block fans accuse Wyatt of being ‘lazy’
Before viewers knew the extent of the damage, Wyatt’s on-screen activities had already raised a few eyebrows.
Fans were particularly confused that he appeared unable to work but could still eat and fit in a gym session.
“Wyatt can’t work because of a toothache, yet he can still eat and go to the gym for a workout,” one viewer wrote. “What a big man-baby sook.”
Another questioned how he had managed to find time for exercise during an already frantic renovation week.
“I’ve only been watching The Block for the last four or five years,” they wrote. “I’ve never known anyone to be able to go to the gym during work hours. Is this serious?”
Others were less measured.
“Seriously, Wyatt needs to go,” one person declared. “What a lazy ass he is. Let someone on the show who knows what’s going on and is willing to work hard.”
“He should have gone to the dentist after it started hurting,” another added. “A waste of space. They should have left last week.”
“Grow up,” one viewer wrote, while another simply called him an “idiot”.
Subtlety was clearly taking the week off.
How is Wyatt’s tooth now?
The troublesome molar is no longer in Wyatt’s mouth, but it has not left his possession.
“I still have the tooth,” he revealed. “I wanted to keep the tooth.”
Following the extraction, Wyatt headed directly back to site rather than taking additional time away from the build.
His decision may not completely silence viewers who questioned the gym visit, but a fracture extending vertically into the gum is certainly a little more serious than the run-of-the-mill toothache depicted on screen.
Whether the explanation earns Wyatt some sympathy remains to be seen.
At the very least, he now has the tooth to prove it.
