TV host Peter Helliar broke down in tears on The Project on Tuesday night after a particularly moving segment struck a nerve with the star.

The heartbreaking moment occurred following a piece around suicide and the tragic death of Peter’s former co-host and friend, Richard Marsland in 2008.
When the segment ended, Peter, who worked with Richard on Triple M’s Melbourne breakfast show, appeared to be staring down instead of facing the cameras, which prompted Waleed Aly to ask him if he was OK.
“Yeah. Um … We need to keep talking about it [mental illness]. We need to keep listening,” the 44-year-old replied, overcome with emotion.
Peter went on to share the story of his mate, who he tragically lost to suicide.
Richard Marsland – an Australian comedian, actor and radio personality – took his own life aged 32.
“Um… Uh, only a few people knew … um, about Richard’s history. I don’t begrudge him not sharing that, or his family not letting us know at all,” he said.
“But hopefully, 11 years on, we know how to have those conversations and we are better at having them.”
The segment was to create a conversation around the mental health crisis in Australia.
“We’ve come a long way when it comes to our understanding of mental illness. Yet every day on average, eight Australians still take their lives,” Peter said.
However, the host also took the opportunity to pay tribute to his friend.
“Rich was more than a mate. He was like family,” he said.
“Rich was always smiling. I thought he was always happy, but I was wrong.”
Carrie Bickmore went on to highlight the issue on her Twitter after the show, and acknowledged the work of Peter in raising awareness.
“I know how hard that was to do @pjhelliar but you did such a beautiful job. My heart aches for you and Richard’s beautiful friends and family. Thank you for this powerful piece,” she wrote.
