In 2010 Prince William asked for Kate Middleton’s hand in marriage, sealing the deal with Princess Diana’s 12-carat blue Ceylon sapphire engagement ring. While the Duchess of Cambridge proudly sports her stunning sparkler, people can’t help but notice the Duke’s wedding band is no where to be seen.
After the couple tied the knot in 2011, a spokesperson from the palace revealed why the Prince has chosen to forgo the ring.
‘It is simply down to personal preference,’ they revealed. ‘It was something that the couple discussed but Prince William isn’t one for jewellery.’
This isn’t an unusual choice for royal families, with many British upper class traditionally forgoing wedding jewellery altogether.
‘This is not because of any intentions that they may wish to play away from home once married, but because it was traditionally not the done thing for gentleman to wear jewelry,’ explained William Hanson, an etiquette expert. ‘Not wearing a wedding band is one of those quirky British silent class indicators, like the color of your shoes on a Thursday, or the way you fold your top pocket handkerchief.’
Prince Charles is one of few royals today who choose to wear a wedding band.
