Although he is part of a successful radio duo now, Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli was once fired by another famous duo.
Wipfli, was offered a job by Andy Lee to help on his and Hamish Blake’s summer show.
“Hamish and Andy had started to do some stuff, and they said ‘I reckon we can get you back to town if you’re keen to do some panel work,’” Wipfli said on the You’ve Got To Start Somewhere podcast.
“So they brought me in as a panel operator.”
He may be successful in his role on Fitzy & Wippa, but he was not so great as a panel operator: “I was terrible. Oh man.”
The D-day came when Wipfli slept through his alarm and was very late to work.
“I’d been at a friend’s Christmas party and I’d fallen asleep on the phone in bed and I was late, completely late,” he said.
When he finally got to work, he was fired by one of the bosses.
“I said ‘I couldn’t agree more. Don’t soften the blow, I’d sack myself too.’”
However, things are perfectly fine between the old friends now. Wipfli and Blake are even godfather to each other’s sons.
