I’m going to guess that when you think of Elle MacPherson self-doubt isn’t something that comes to mind. You probably assume that the Australian supermodel, who has adorned the most iconic magazine covers and built successful businesses, breezes past it while the rest of us trudge through it.
But just like the rest of us, Elle admitted to WHO that confidence, or a lack of it, has “robbed” her of enjoying some of the most pinnacle moments in her career.
When WHO asked the 61-year-old to point towards a time when her confidence was wielded against her in her career, she couldn’t pick a single one.
“I think my lack of confidence was really the issue,” she said.
“I wanted to do a really good job and I didn’t have a lot of experience and I just felt very uncomfortable along the way. My lack of confidence meant that it sort of robbed me of the joy… I think my own lack of confidence was used against me.”
Who knew we had something in common with a supermodel?
What role did Elle MacPherson feel most confident in?
While we couldn’t possibly forget her role as Joey’s flatmate, Janine in Friends or her cameo in the 1997 Batman & Robin movie, it was a “little movie” she starred alongside Sarah Jessica Parker that Elle felt her most confident in her.
“I made a little movie called If Lucy Fell… I loved that movie because it felt so authentic to me,” she said.
“Eric [Schaefer] and I, the director, had written a lot of the dialogue and they were my thoughts and feelings. And I expressed them as I would like to express them in that moment.”
She believes “authenticity” is the key to confidence, and her experience on set helped reaffirm that.
“That was a really standout moment for me in filmmaking.”

Elle MacPherson partners with Bond to get back to basics
Her struggle to feel comfortable in her own skin is a sobering revelation for us all, but one that is still truly valid – and indicative of what we’re up against as women.
As the goal posts of those ever-elusive beauty standards continue to shift, keeping us all on our toes, Elle has decided to get back to basics in a bid to reinforce her confidence now.
Elle has partnered with Bonds in the ‘Let’s Talk About Flex’ range, championing comfort and self-confidence with basics items.
“The campaign and my values felt very aligned,” she said. “It’s quintessentially Aussie, it supports people in their natural self, their real self.. and it also promotes inner beauty, confidence and sense of humour, which is so important today.”
