With events cancelled or curtailed during the previous two years due to the pandemic, 2022 saw a glorious return of the red carpet, where stars embraced colour or bold and fun looks for events, from the Oscars to the Emmys and beyond.
ZENDAYA
The actress attended the 94th Annual Academy Awards in March wearing Valentino Haute Couture, channelling Sharon Stone’s 1998 Oscars look. Zendaya starred in Dune, which was nominated for Best Picture. Bulgari jewels and a silver manicure finished off her incredible ensemble.
ANA DE ARMAS
Looking every inch a star in Louis Vuitton at the Venice International Film Festival premiere of Blonde, the actress received a 14-minute standing ovation for her role as Marilyn Monroe in the film Red.
JESSICA CHASTAIN
The actress wore Gucci for the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscars party, after winning the Best Actress gong for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. She thanked co-star Andrew Garfield “for bringing out the best in me”.
DAKOTA JOHNSON
For the Vanity Fair Oscars party, only feathered Gucci would do for the Fifty Shades of Grey actress – with no jewellery required.
“We talk a lot, we text,” she said to Vanity Fair of her relationship with [then] Gucci designer, Alessandro Michele. “I don’t feel he’s elsewhere when I speak to him, which I feel most of the time when I speak to people that work in fashion.”
FLORENCE PUGH
The Wonder premiere, during October’s 66th BFI London Film Festival, saw this star showcasing a sheer, coral Valentino number. “When you feel good in the clothes that you’re wearing, you are unstoppable,” the Brit told The Outnet.
KIM KARDASHIAN
Kardashian took making an entrance to the next level when she wore Marilyn Monroe’s iconic 1962 ‘Happy Birthday’ dress to the Met Gala in May. The reality star dropped 7kg to fit into the delicate gown and said afterwards, “I’m just so grateful even for the opportunity.”
JULIANNE MOORE
When the Netflix film White Noise screened at the Venice International Film Festival, Moore opted for sequins galore with her Valentino get-up at its premiere – complemented by Cartier jewellery.
OLIVIA WILDE
Glowing in Gucci at the 79th Venice International Film Festival – but potentially out of her comfort zone – the Don’t Worry Darling director told HOLR magazine, “My most comfortable state is when I’m wearing low-rise jeans, sneakers and a sweatshirt.”
JODIE TURNER-SMITH
Turner-Smith turned heads during October’s 2nd Annual Academy Museum Gala in an embellished Gucci gown. “It’s all costume,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
ANNE HATHAWAY
The Barbie-core trend inspired Hathaway’s pink Valentino mini for the label’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 22/23 fashion show in July. “Fashion-wise, people are very excited about what’s happening with her,” her stylist Erin Walsh told Today.
TILDA SWINTON
Nobody does edgy, individual style better than British actress Swinton – and she brought her fashion A-game in this Charles Jeffrey Loverboy ensemble at The Fashion Awards in London.
JULIA ROBERTS
Whoever said high-end fashion couldn’t have a sense of humour, too? Roberts rocked this George Clooney tribute dress by Moschino to The Kennedy Center Honors event in December. Love it!
