We’re all for drinking pina coladas, we don’t even mind getting caught in the rain, but we’d much rather be prepared should the latter occur. Raincoats aren’t notoriously the most fashionable piece in our wardrobes. Well, until now. We’ve found the most stylish women’s fashion raincoats that will have you begging for a downpour.

The history of the rain jacket

It all began back in the 1800s, when Charles Macintosh’s patented the first raincoat. But by far the most iconic moment for the raincoat was when Thomas Burberry invented gabardine in 1879. The breathable, weatherproof and hard-wearing fabric revolutionised rainwear and became the fabric used to make the London brand’s cult trench coats, which were worn by soldiers during the First World War, and are now arguably one of the most coveted items in every woman’s wardrobe.

The current raincoat trends

While women’s raincoats used to be a tricky beast to style, often looking like an oversized garbage bag that did nothing for your outfit, these days it’s hard to get it wrong. Designers have you covered with flattering silhouettes, colourful designs and comfortable fits (no stiff PVC in sight!).

Printed raincoats are having a major moment (animal print and artist-inspired designs in particular), and the see-through raincoat trend of a few years back continues to prove a stylish raincoat choice.

How to find the right rain jacket

For the best coverage, the longer the hemline the better; your sleeves should line up with your wrist bone; and you’ll find all the latest trendy raincoats with hoods because ain’t nobody got time for frizzy rain hair.

A slightly larger fit allows for layering underneath, but don’t go too roomy – that shapeless poncho look is out…indefinitely.
