After a lengthy hiatus, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has returned for 2024, with a star-studded lineup of veteran and newcomer VS angels taking to the runway for the first time since 2019.
The show, which has long been a bucket list booking for models and supermodels around the world in its prime. is essentially the Superbowl of underwear, with fans tuning in every wear to see the extravagant angel wings, colourful matching sets, and the ultra-luxe fantasy bra reserved for a select lucky few to wear.
The shows seemed to get bigger and more glamourous as the years went on and boasted performers like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd over the years. So, why did it stop?
The brand found itself at the centre of controversy as the world took a look at the entertainment industry during the Me Too movement. This called for more inclusivity, body positivity and empowerment for women. The sample size silhouette that the brand was known for didn’t quite make the cut anymore. In 2018, the show faced its worst-ever ratings, which led to a total cancellation.
But this year marked the start of something new for the brand, which has since regularly featured models of different ethnicities, shapes and sizes for their campaigns.
Veteran names returned to the runway, with Gigi Hadid and Tyra Banks heading the promotions. Cher, Tyla and Lisa of Blackpink were the musical guests on the night. Banks walked in the very first Victoria’s Secret show, so it was only right for her to close this one. She dazzled, smizing in a black full-length bodysuit and cape as the rest of the models returned to the runway behind her for the final time.
Another shocking change was that the looks were largely wearable. And that wasn’t by accident, with all of the pieces worn by the angels being available for viewers to purchase in-store.
