After nearly four years, The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is set to return.
“The new version” of the iconic show comes after the brand overhauled its controversial brand image.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was a high-profile annual event following its debut in 1995. The show’s models, dubbed Victorias Secret “angels” became household names and A-list stars including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Harry Styles performed during the televised show.
The fashion show was cancelled in 2019 after Les Wexner, the CEO of Victoria’s Secret’s parent company L Brands’ was tied to Jeffrey Epstein.
In 2020, New York Times published an article detailing the work environment at Victoria’s Secret, claiming top executives at L Brands’ cultivated an environment of “misogyny” and “bullying.”
But it wasn’t just the controversies surrounding the company’s top executives that led to Victoria’s Secret’s demise.
The lingerie brand was increasingly scrutinised for its repeated use of thin, and predominantly white models in both fashion shows and campaigns and the brand was criticised for its lack of inclusivity in the wake of the body positivity movement.
In 2021 the company began an overhaul of its image following their break away from Les Wexner.
“When we became a stand-alone company in August 2021, we set out to regain the trust of our customers, associates and partners,” Victoria’s Secret & Co said in a statement on March 3.
“Today, we are proud to be a different company, with a new leadership team and mission to welcome, celebrate, and champion all women.”
The company has since placed an emphasis on diversity, bringing in “more models and ambassadors of diverse sizes, ages abilities and identities.”
Although they have announced the return of the annual fashion show this year, the company have not revealed any more details about who will walk, when it will be held and what the new format will entail.
