Easy ways to incorporate colour into your home

Bold colour is coming back!

For years, minimalism dominated how we styled our homes, but recently there’s been a very colourful shift.

It’s time we said goodbye to beige tones and polished textures and hello to vibrant colour combos and saturated hues – maximalism has arrived and is here to stay.

But if you’re a minimalist at heart and hesitant to decorate your entire home in rainbow hues, Karen Davis, designer and co-founder of Shibori Studio + Gallery, shares some small and simple ways to inject colour into your space.

1. Start Small

While pops of colour can make a bold statement, you don’t necessarily need to saturate your whole space in vibrant tones. Davis recommends adding a dash of colour through a simple decor switch.

“Cushions are a great way to play around with colour and texture,” she explains.

“It’s also not overpowering, so if you are nervous about colour, it’s a great way to dip your toes into the water by adding something that can easily be removed or added to.”

2. Works of Art

“Artwork is a great way to add colour to a space without overpowering it,” says Davis.

“Instead of looking for a standard painting or print, try sculptured artwork, something that not only adds colour but also dimension to your space. Also, try a bright artwork that is monochromatic. This way you’re adding new colour trends to your space without it being loud and overpowering.”

3. Freshen up with florals

For an uplifting touch, Davis suggests a bright bouquet of fresh flowers which can instantly lighten up the space.

“I always think it’s best to look outside the box – artichoke flowers are a fantastic bright purple and often can be sourced at your local fruit and vegetable market.”

If you’re time-poor try decorating with faux florals, which can be just as effective.

5. Final Touch

“You can’t go past textiles for adding colour and altering mood,” says Davis. Adding colour and texture through the simple addition of a lush throw or a statement tablecloth are easy ways to spruce up your space.

“When it comes to textiles it’s all about the base fabric,” she adds.

“I love a good velvet when adding a throw and a sheer is beautiful for a tablecloth.”
