Time really does fly; the Sturgeon Full Moon (aka the August full moon) is almost upon us!
We’ve already had the Strawberry Moon and the Buck Moon – and there’s a partial solar eclipse set for September – but they’re slightly different from this month’s celestial event.
Read on for everything you need to know about the Sturgeon Full Moon; set to take place on August 9, 2025.
Why is the August full moon called the Sturgeon Moon?
The name Sturgeon Moon comes from Native American and early colonial traditions, where full moons were often named after what was happening in nature at the time.
Back then, giant sturgeon (a type of fish) were most abundant in the Great Lakes and other major rivers in the month of August.

So, naturally, August’s full moon got its name from this seasonal fishing peak.
Why is the August full moon special?
While the Sturgeon Moon name comes from northern hemisphere traditions, its magic isn’t lost on us Down Under.
In Australia, the August full moon will bring a sense of stillness and clarity.
How can I see it in Australia?
The Sturgeon Moon will hit its peak on August 9, 2025 at 5.55pm AEST.
If it’s a clear night (sorry Sydneysiders, clouds and rain are predicted), you should be able to see it without a telescope

What does the Sturgeon Moon mean spiritually?
Spiritually, this moon is all about strength, resilience, and deep emotional growth.
Named after one of the oldest and most tenacious fish in the world, this moon carries serious survivor energy.
Think: shedding old stories, swimming upstream, and trusting your inner wisdom; even when the current gets rough.
It’s a full moon that encourages reflection. You might feel a little nostalgic, a little raw, or even wildly intuitive.
Don’t be surprised if old emotions resurface or you find yourself dreaming vivid, symbolic dreams.

The energy here is less about taking action and more about letting go – of limiting beliefs, toxic cycles, or anything that no longer feels aligned.
What can I do to honour the Sturgeon Full Moon?
We love getting a little witchy sometimes.
If you want to honour the Sturgeon Moon this August, you can:
- Host a full moon dinner with a few close friends: make it potluck-style and ask everyone to bring a dish that feels comforting or nostalgic. Share what you’re letting go of or manifesting, or just toast to the moon.
- Burn a candle with intention: choose a scent that feels grounding or transformative (like sandalwood, patchouli, cedar or clove), and spend a few quiet minutes focusing on what you’re ready to shift.
- Write a letter to your past self: Thank her for getting you here. Fold it up and keep it in a drawer or (safely) burn it ceremonially.
- Do a home energy reset: Rearrange your furniture, burn incense, or diffuse oils while repeating an intention like, “I clear what no longer serves me.”
