As people become more conscious of the potential impact they can have abroad, Booking.com— an e-commerce company that took answers from 21,500 travellers across 29 countries— has predicted that those vacationing in 2019 will be more likely to plan a trip that involves volunteering.
In an attempt to give back and make their trips more meaningful, Booking.com found that 54% of people will travel to third world countries and volunteer to help those less fortunate.
Perhaps we have celebrities like Angelina Jolie to thank for the spike in this trend.
It’s no secret Jolie has a big heart for philanthropic work, having made it her mission to improve the quality of life of thousands of people around the world.
The Oscar-winning actress— who became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001— has visited dozens of war-torn countries, donated millions of dollars to non-profit organisations, created her own foundations to aid causes close to her heart and provided better schooling and health care systems for those in need.
Aside from Jolie, earlier this year actress Lucy Hale also spent time volunteering overseas, documenting her trip on social media. The Pretty Little Liars alum travelled to Cambodia for a number of weeks to volunteer with RipplEffect, a non-profit organisation that helps children with disabilities.
“Humbled to be here spending time with magical children,” she wrote. “These kids have so little.”
With charities like Involvement Volunteers International and Projects Abroad, people wanting to make their mark on the world can do so by partaking in the volunteer programmes they provide.
From building schools to teaching underprivileged children, these missions can help make a difference.
