SCHOOL is officially out for thousands of school leavers who have kicked off Schoolies Week celebrations to mark the end of their high school days.
While the Gold Coast’s Surfers Paradise remains the hot spot for revellers, more than 6,000 Aussie school leavers will be heading to the Indonesian party island of Bali for celebrations over the coming weeks.
However, Australian Border Force officials have warned that teens who bring exotic goods, illicit drugs and weapons back into Australia could be left with more than just a nasty hangover after their end-of-year celebrations.
“Those travelling overseas for Schoolies may think items such as laser pointers, flick knives, and shock devices make nice souvenirs or gifts, but if you are caught bringing them back into Australia, they could cost you more than you bargained for,” ABF Port Operations Command, Acting Assistant Commissioner Claire Rees, told news.com.au
“If you bring in these items, you may face prosecution and it could negatively impact your chances to work for certain employers and in certain professions, travel to and work in certain countries.”
Banned items include firearms, knives, knuckledusters, pepper spray and laser pointers, which can led to a $210,000 fine if bought back into Australia.
Those unsure whether their overseas purchases are allowed or not should declare the items to save risking a fine and potential jail time, according to officials.
