Setouchi Aonagi, Japan
This intimate Japanese hotel may be small but what it lacks in size it makes up for in style.
The exclusive seven-suite retreat, located on a remote mountaintop in Matsuyama, was designed by award-winning architect Tadao Ando in 1998 and was originally a contemporary art museum.
Ando successfully remodeled the property into a minimalist hotel, which opened to the public a few years ago.
The highlight however, is the mesmeric infinity pool, which faces out to the Seto Inland Sea in the west. In September, the sun is said to set directly over the centre of the pool, turning the pool into a glowing mirror.
