From RSV to the flu, winter illnesses come thicker and faster than the rain. And, while winter in the Southern Hemisphere is in its final month, that doesn’t mean it’s time to let your guard down against sickness.
Cold and flu viruses can linger well beyond August, making now the perfect time to catch up on missed vaccinations and take stock of your health before spring arrives.
To help you stay protected against winter illnesses (even once the weather warms up), TerryWhite Chemmart Pharmacist Lauren Haworth answers your questions…
I’m a bit behind on booking my flu vaccination. Have I missed the boat this year?
Not at all! Many people believe the flu season wraps up when the calendar hits August, but that’s not the case.
Last year, we saw flu activity extending well into December. Influenza is unpredictable, and it’s never too late to bolster your defences, especially as we head into the second half of the year.
Getting vaccinated now provides a vital shield that can protect you for the months ahead, even as we move towards spring and into summer. It’s a proactive step that helps ensure you stay well, regardless of when the peak of the season occurs.

Are there any other illnesses I should get protected against?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is often thought of as a childhood illness, but it can cause significant respiratory issues in older adults, such as severe bronchitis or pneumonia.
Access to funded vaccines against RSV has recently changed, and is now available for free for adults aged 75 and over, as well as for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 60 and older.
Better yet, RSV vaccinations can be given by your local pharmacist, who can also assess your eligibility.

Aside from getting vaccinated, what else should I be doing?
Vaccinations are the cornerstone of your winter defence, but they’re just one part of the picture.
