Flu and the common cold tend to dominate winter health conversations, but there’s another respiratory virus worth having on your radar — Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
RSV can cause serious illness in older adults, leading to complications including pneumonia and worsening heart and lung conditions.
The good news? Eligible Australians can now access RSV vaccination directly through their local pharmacy (read: no GP appointment required).
To get the lowdown on the RSV vaccine, WHO chats to TerryWhite Chemmart Pharmacist Bena Ong about what you need to know now.
Is RSV only something children contract?
It’s a very common misconception that RSV only affects children.
While respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a well-known risk for infants, it can be just as serious for older adults.
As we age, our immune systems don’t bounce back quite as quickly, and RSV can lead to severe complications like pneumonia or the worsening of existing heart and lung conditions.
In fact, hospitalisation rates for RSV increase significantly as we get older. This is why a single-dose vaccination is recommended for adults aged 75 and over, as well as those over 60 with conditions that may weaken their immunity.

Do you need a prescription from a GP to get an RSV vaccine?
If you are 60 or older, you can come straight to us at TerryWhite Chemmart.
Our pharmacists are trained to assess your eligibility and administer the RSV vaccine here in the CareClinic, without the need for a GP prescription.
It’s all about removing the hurdles so you can stay focused on your social calendar or travel plans, rather than on sitting in waiting rooms.

Is the RSV shot going to be another annual appointment to remember like the flu shot?
Unlike the flu vaccine, which requires an annual update to keep up with changing strains, current evidence shows that RSV protection lasts for at least two years.
Think of it as a long-term investment in your respiratory health – one visit now protects through multiple winters.
