Prince Philip is known for his sharp tongue and has often put his foot in it both privately and publicly in the past.
But what the Duke of Edinburgh said to Sarah Ferguson following her divorce announcement to Prince Andrew in 1992, is perhaps one of his cruellest one-liners to date.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward’s 1995 book “Prince Edward” reveals how Fergie broke the news to her in-laws, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip that she had their son, Prince Andrew, were separating…and exactly how Philip reacted to the news.
“The Duchess of York took the brunt of Prince Philip’s displeasure,” reports The Express of Seward’s book.
“Even by his own standards, he was exceptionally brusque when she told him and the Queen that she was planning to leave Prince Andrew.
“He reminded her of her marital duty and insulted her by suggesting that if she really was going to leave she should book herself into a ‘nunnery or looney bin’.”
Fergie, who shares two children with Prince Andrew, daughters Princess Beatrice, 30 and Prince Eugenie, 29, has had her fair share of public embarrassment, including her infamous “toe sucking’ photos and accepting a bribe from a ‘fake sheikh’ – all of which will no doubt have left Philip furious.
However, in recent years, their ongoing feud seems to have simmered. The Duchess of York was invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding at Windsor Castle last May, and held court at her daughter Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank at the same venue just a few months later.
Fergie also appears to have been welcomed back to the royal fold, given the increasing amount of joint public appearances she has put in with ex-husband Prince Andrew, sparking speculation that the former royal couple have rekindled their romance.
