In the twenty years since the tragic death of Princess Diana, public opinion on how the Queen handled the aftermath of the passing of her grandchildren’s mother – coupled with the monarch’s inability to publicly mourn – has been resolutely negative.
However, newly-resurfaced letters to Lady Henriette Abel Smith, a close friend and lady in waiting, reveal that the now 93-year-old Queen was indeed grieving the loss of the People’s Princess.
“It was indeed dreadfully sad, and she is a huge loss to the country,” The Express reports the Queen as writing.
“But the public reaction to her death and the service in the Abbey seem to have united people around the world in a rather inspiring way.”
Lady Henriette’s letter from the Queen was auctioned off following her death in 2005 and obtained by the Daily Mail.
Queen Elizabeth also expressed how proud she was of Prince William and Prince Harry, describing them as “so brave” and stated that the royal family has “all been through a very bad experience.”
