Despite their divorce being finalised almost two decades ago, there is still a lot of fascination about the high-profile marriage.

Now the actress is sharing the truth behind her decision to not speak about her Scientologist ex-husband.

In an interview with The Observer, Kidman was asked whether she saw any similarities between her role as an evangelical Christian preacher’s wife in Boy Erased and her marriage to Scientologist Tom Cruise.

“I have a husband now,” Kidman said.

“I feel out of respect for him I don’t want to talk about that. It has been 20 years.”

“I have come to the point where I can say: ‘I am not going to keep discussing my ex.’ It’s nice for me to be able to say that, finally,” she added

“Nobody would sit at a dinner party and answer questions about their ex while their current partner is sitting there.

“It is disrespectful to Keith and to Tom. I would rather be a respectful woman. I have read stuff I have said in the past and thought: ‘Bloody hell, Nicole! Keep your mouth shut!’”

The former couple were married from 1990 to 2011 and share their two adopted kids, Connor, 23 and Isabella, 25.

In an Australian exclusive interview with WHO, Kidmans spoke about her two eldest kids.

“I’m very private about all that. I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Speaking candidly about her two eldest kids – who practise Scientology – Kidman says, “They are adults.”
“They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”
