Missing watching the Matildas in action now that the FIFA World Cup is over? Well, you might not realise just how many of the Matildas are playing in the Barclays Women’s Super League – the highest league of women’s football in England.
The Matildas’ very own Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross are playing for Arsenal FC and Mackenzie Arnold is saving goals for West Ham United. Not only that, but Arnold was also named Captain of West Ham for the 23/24 season.
Teagan Micah is also in the league, playing for Liverpool FC, as are Courtney Nevin for Leicester City and Clare Wheeler for Everton FC. And last but certainly not least, Alanna Kennedy and Mary Fowler are on the field for Manchester City.
Speaking with WHO Magazine, Steph Catley said the league has become “so strong” in recent years.
“[Arsenal] have come very close [to winning] for many years now,” she says of their chances in 2024. “And you really can’t afford to slip up at all.
“It’s super, super tight. And there are some massive games coming up. And I think that’s what makes it exciting. The league has gotten so strong and any team can beat anyone on any given day. It’s exciting, and I hope this is our year. I hope we can continue to to get wins and to play. We’ve definitely started to come into some form.”

Catley and Foord have been joined on the field by Kyra Cooney-Cross this year.
“I think it’s always nice to have fellow Aussies around,” Catley tells WHO. “I think it always just gives you a little taste of home and yeah, [Kyra] is obviously sort of at the start of everything for her which is really exciting. It’s like a totally different realm to where I’m at in my career, so I think it’s nice that I can be there for her, when she’s navigating some of the tough times that you go through when you first come to a to an elite club to a really competitive environment.
“And, you know, she’s got Cait and I here. And obviously, lots of the other girls are here in London and in the WSL, in general. So she’s got lots of Australians around her. And she’s doing really, really well. She’s learning so much. And I’ve seen her her game grow so much already. So she’s put herself in a great position. And, yeah, it’s nice to be able to go through the process with that. Yeah, yeah.”
