Having a child go missing is every parent’s worst nightmare. Although in the case of new mum Joanna (Jenna Coleman), is it?
She hasn’t exactly had an easy time with baby Noah, struggling to settle him and suffering postnatal depression. When the infant goes missing from the back of her and husband Alistair’s (Ewen Leslie) car, it’s not inconceivable that she knows more than she’s letting on about the disappearance. Or could Alistair’s ex-wife, Alex (Asher Keddie), be involved?
The former couple are involved in a bitter custody battle over their teenage daughter, Chloe (Markella Kavenagh), who lives in Australia with her mother while Alistair and Joanna reside in Scotland. The new parents are visiting Australia to deal with the matter in person when Noah is taken. Could Alex be seeking revenge against her ex? The tension doesn’t lift for a second in this four-part series based on the novel of the same name by Helen FitzGerald.
The narrative skips around, flashing backwards – showing how Alistair and Joanna got together during the breakdown of his marriage to Alex – and forwards to a court case stemming from the disappearance. As different perspectives of the same scenes are shown, the audience is kept guessing about exactly what happened, without the plot ever being too confusing to follow. Gripping stuff.
