And the show’s original stars Sigrid Thornton and John Howard will reprise their roles as Laura Gibson and Bob Jelly in the new series.

SeaChange was today announced as part of the Nine Network’s line-up of shows for 2019. The original series aired on the ABC from 1998 to 2000, and focused on city lawyer, Laura’s move with her two children to the small coastal town of Pearl Bay.

Thornton won consecutive Logies in 1999 and 2000 for Most Outstanding Actress for her role as Laura in SeaChange.

What do we know about the new series? It takes place 20 years later, with Laura returning to Pearl Bay. This time, however, the town needs Laura just as much as she needs it.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be returning to Pearl Bay,” Thornton, 59, said in a statement. “Time has passed and the world has changed, so as we revisit this rich and strange place I trust we’ll all delight in the chance to explore how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.

“I can hardly wait.”

The show’s original creator and head writer, Deb Cox, returns as executive producer alongside Thornton, Fiona Eager and David Mott.

Nine’s co-head of Drama, Andy Ryan said: “Two decades after SeaChange changed the face of Australian drama, Pearl Bay is still a hotbed of romance, mateship and community spirit. With plenty of fresh faces and new challenges, SeaChange is perfect family entertainment.”

Added Nine’s co-head of drama, Jo Rooney: “SeaChange is one of Australia’s most successful and best-loved dramas, and we’re excited to rekindle that magic for a new generation of viewers. The perils faced by Laura and the townsfolk of Pearl Bay are more topical than ever, and we can’t wait to see how they respond.”

SeaChange will start production in 2019.
