Australia’s very own Joel Edgerton returns to the director’s chair for emotional and confronting new film, Boy Erased.
Based on the novel of the same name, the film tells the real-life story of Jared (Lucas Hedges) a young boy struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. After being forced out of the closet, his religious parents send him to a gay conversion therapy program.
It is an alarming and exposing affair of the turmoil that the LGTIQ+ community face when being subjected to such controversial measures.
At times, it can be hard to watch and infuriating but that’s just what Egerton wants you to feel. He especially handles the dynamic between unaccepting parents and LGBTIQ+ children superbly as he explores the repercussions of such rejection.
Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are just perfect as Jared’s parents as they truly capture the conflict between religion and sexuality. Pop singer Troye Sivan also proves a treat in his first acting role in a major picture.
Proving he can both direct and act, Egerton pulls a double act as he triumphantly plays the menacing and infuriating conversion therapy leader, Victor Sykes. Bravo!
Verdict: A touching tale that explores the trials and tribulations of love and acceptance.
Boy Erased hits Aussie cinemas on November 8.
