Albeit a slight difference in age, it was still a teenage popstar dream when our very own Delta Goodrem took up with Jonas Brother, Nick, for 10 months in 2011.
It was a romance no one really expected, given their careers were so rooted in their own home countries, but strange connections are made in showbiz, and it wasn’t long before the pair were papped together, and seen attending parties.
According to reports – some from Nick’s brother, Joe – Delta even spent time with the Jonas family during their relationship, with all signs pointing to the pair becoming very tight.
It did, however, turn out to be just a flash in the pan, but still remains to be one of our favourite ‘crossover’ relationships from the music industry.
Here’s a look back at their iconic whirlwind romance.
Delta and Nick were first linked in May 2011, very quickly after her breakup from former Westlife singer, Brian McFadden.
Delta and Brian had dated for seven years, and were even engaged, but things ended in April of 2011.
“There is so much I’d like to say. I was really unhappy and I didn’t know how to get out,” Delta told Vogue shortly after their breakup.
“I learnt. I got there in the end.”
However, Delta wasted no time striking up a romance with Nick, and the pair were first linked in May of 2011, quickly followed by a romantic getaway in Bali the next month.
While their representatives refused to comment on the status of their relationship, it was becoming pretty obvious with the pap pics that were floating around.
While on their Bali getaway, Nick tweeted: “I have been so blessed. So many great things happening”.
If we were dating someone as beloved as Delta, we’d probably be feeling pretty blessed too.
Meanwhile, the media was having none of it, accusing Delta of participating in a ‘photo war’ with ex Brian McFadden, who was being papped at the time with DJ and TV star, Vogue Williams.
Delta and Nick were then seen together pretty regularly as their relationship progressed, but the negative press only continued, taking aim this time at their age gap.
Nick was 18 at the time of their relationship, and Delta was 26. Headlines questioned if they were moving too fast and called their eight-year age gap ‘questionable’.
One article even claimed that Nick had received a ‘ton of backlash from his younger fan-base due to his eight-years-older girlfriend’, and went on to say how different she was from Nick’s ex, Selena Gomez, whom he dated at age 16.
Any JoBro stan would know, though, that Nick would eventually marry Priyanka Chopra, who is 10 years his senior.
The speculation over whether their relationship was ‘moving too fast’ only grew as the couple became seemingly more serious, marked by Nick bringing Delta along to his Mum’s birthday dinner.
They were spotted in attendance at Villa Blanca, a Los Angeles restaurant, along with Nick’s brother, Kevin and his wife Danielle.
However, their doubters needn’t have worried – the pair called it off in February of 2012, having spent about nine months together.
They both remained tight-lipped as to why, with Delta’s team releasing the following statement: “Nick and Delta have decided to mutually end their relationship. At this point in time, they are both focused on their careers as they go on different paths. They remain friends and wish each other the best for their future.”
While some reports emerged that Delta had been left ‘surprised and heartbroken’, she never confirmed anything.
Delta went on to spend a few years single, and began to date her current partner, Matthew Copley, in 2017.
It was confirmed around the same time that her and Nick had remained friends, and were on good terms.
They were seen together at a party, both wearing double denim, in line with the party’s theme.
“When you show up in the same outfit,” he captioned a photo of the pair on his Instagram Stories.
He also shared the image to a Carousel from the night, captioning it “Good night with good people.”
Nick had also told Fitzy and Wippa in 2015 that they were on good terms.
“There’s no issue, she’s great,” he said.
“I love her.”
Delta also went on to work closely with Nick’s older brother, Joe, the following year, which proved further that there was no bad blood between the exes.
Joe spoke fondly of Delta, her romance with Nick, and their working relationship while they were both judges on The Voice in 2018.
“There’s a few times it [the relationship] has been brought up and luckily it’s like a brother-and-sister relationship (between) me and her, and we can really mess with each other and have a good time,” Joe told The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
“Delta was nearly your sister-in law, is that weird? Are you bringing up any jabs… using that as ammunition against her?” host Kyle Sandilands asked Joe.
“It definitely helps,” he responded.
“During the blind auditions we both wanted this artist so bad so we decided to both FaceTime Nick and I was just like, ‘Are you sure it’s the same number?’” he recalled.
“They still hang out and talk,” Joe confirmed.
In the years since, Nick has married Priyanka Chopra.
He proposed to her in Crete, Greece, in 2018, and they tied the knot in December of the same year in traditional Hindu and Christian ceremonies.
Meanwhile, Delta is still in a relationship with Matthew Copley, leaving fans to wonder if marriage is on the horizon for the pair.
“I am pretty consistent with saying to people that my private life is my private life, but we are spending isolation together and, in our household, we’re both performers,” she told Stellar Magazine, speaking about their time together in lockdown in 2020.
“It’s a relationship of respect. Matt is an incredible musician and we really enjoy working together. Music is how we met, it’s what we both do, so it’s really about just being creative in the household.”
