Miley Cyrus had no hesitations about taking husband Liam Hemsworth’s name after their wedding late last year.
During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, the Isn’t It Romantic star, 29, opened up about the joys of married life.
“I heard you got married…to one of my favorite people,” co-host Kelly Ripa told Hemsworth during Friday’s show. “Miley Cyrus.”
“Miley Ray Hemsworth now, actually,” Hemsworth replied, adding that the 26-year-old pop star “took my name,” although she’ll continue to “be known as Miley Cyrus” professionally.
“I think that was honestly one of the best things about it. I didn’t ask her to take my name, but then she’s like, ‘No, of course I’m taking your name,’ ” he explained. “I’m like, ‘That’s awesome. That’s really good.’”
As far as being newlyweds is concerned, Hemsworth also shared that it’s finally starting to sink in that Cyrus is now his wife.
“It’s become a little more normal,” he shared, sweetly adding that it “was really fun to be wife and husband” during the first couple of weeks following their intimate December nuptials.
The actor went on to share that after the ceremony, which was held at the singer’s home in Franklin, Tennessee, he decided it was time to update her name in his phone.
“I just have her in as ‘Wife,’” Hemsworth remarked.
Explaining why the couple opted for such an intimate ceremony, Hemsworth revealed they “never wanted to do anything too extravagant or big.”
“We find the whole thing kind of embarrassing,” the Aussie actor added. “We know how we feel about each other, but we just wanted to do something simple and organic and just with immediate family. But it was a really nice day. Really special.”
“It wasn’t hard — we have a small group of friends,” Hemsworth told Extra at the G’Day USA Black Tie Gala last month.
“It was mainly immediate family, a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing,” he explained, adding, “I am very happy to be where I am.”
That evening, Hemsworth was honored at the gala, accepting the excellence in film award, and he made sure to give an extra special thanks to his new wife, who was in the crowd cheering him on.
“Thank you to my beautiful wife,” Hemsworth said near the end of his speech, prompting the audience to burst into loud applause.
“You are a sweet, sweet angel. You’re great, you’re great,” he continued, after which the “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” singer could be heard shouting from her seat, “More about me!”
He playfully added, “Yeah, I’ll tell you later.”
