Rebecca Gibney: At 53 she feels more confident and sexier than ever

The star is currently in Wanted playing the strong and formidable Lola.

She’s been a familiar face on our TV screens for more than 30 years, and since she started out as a female mechanic in The Flying Doctors, Rebecca Gibney has carved out a career for herself playing strong, independent women.

In her latest role, she’s one half of a female duo on the run in Season 3 of Wanted, available on 7plus.

“They’re not waiting for men to save them or looking for a man to complete them,” Gibney, 53, says.

“That’s sexy.”

What does sexy mean to you?

Sexy is someone who is really comfortable in their own skin. It’s someone that recognises their own authenticity and is happy to rest in that, in a way. And big, wide, open smiles and kind eyes are sexy to me.

Starting out in the industry, did you think you were sexy?

Oh, gosh no. Never. Still don’t at all. I was always terribly insecure with my physicality and I think it’s only since coming into my
40s and 50s that I’ve started to feel more comfortable with who I am. Does it make me sexy? I don’t know about that. But it certainly makes me feel at ease with everything. I know what I want and I’m not afraid to reach out for it – in every aspect of my life.

What do you find sexy about your husband, Richard Bell?
We’ve been together 18 years and we’re coming up to 17 years of marriage. He’s everything. He has a wacky sense of humour, and I find that incredibly sexy. Apart from being my best friend, he’s creative and passionate. We’re a partnership in every sense of the word. That’s what a marriage is. It’s compromise and understanding and allowing people to be who they’re born to be and encouraging that. And that’s what he does for me.

When do you feel most confident?

Probably when I’m at home in my comfort zone. Because I have such a contented, happy home life, when I’m sitting with a cup of tea in my pyjamas I feel at my best. But I also love being in a collaborative environment with writers and other creative people tossing around ideas. That’s not really sexy, that’s just being confident, because I believe what I have to contribute is worth it.
