It’s been almost three years since Tayla Damir won the first ever season of Love Island Australia, but as any fan of the show would know, she didn’t exactly have the fairytale ending.
The 24-year-old confessed her love for fellow contestant Grant Crapp during the season finale and the couple walked away with a whopping $50,000.
But just hours after the show wrapped, Tayla was confronted by numerous media outlets with the same, recurring story – that Grant had a secret girlfriend on the outside who was also living with him.
Speaking on the Shameless podcast, the Love Island winner confessed that her split with Grant as a result of the lies wasn’t heartbreak, in her eyes.
“In the nicest way possible, that wasn’t heartbreak to me, that was more embarrassment. That was more ‘Ok this situation sucks and I fell for this,’” she told co-hosts Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald.
“It was six weeks – it was not ‘This is the person that I’m going to marry.’ Yes it felt like that being trapped in a little bubble at the time but then coming out and realising that I felt so much more heartbreak over past relationships, I looked at this as ‘You know what, you’re nothing, get away from me.’”
Speaking to Who shortly after her stint on the show, Tayla confessed that Grant’s relationship with girlfriend, Lucy Cartwright was no surprise.
“Obviously, there were more reasons as to why we broke up other than just a rumoured girlfriend. There were pretty clear signs they were still talking and I wasn’t going to be the other girl,” she said.
“It was all the lies that got to me, at the end of the day. I’d ask him, ‘Have you spoken to her?’ and he’d say, ‘No,’ but then there were text messages proving that he was. I would see it on his phone. It was one thing after another and stories weren’t adding up. My gut was telling me to get out, so I listened. I knew I had to get out. Everything we’ve seen that’s come since the break-up has really proven my gut was right.”
Tayla went on to date Love Island co-star Dom Thomas for seven months after her relationship with Grant ended but is now dating AFL player, Nathan Broad.
Due to the coronavirus lockdown, the couple made the bold decision to move in together in the Queensland AFL bubble right when Love Island was airing in the UK but still appear to be very much in love.
Posting to Instagram in December, Tayla shared an adorable montage of the couple captioning it:” Life’s thrown us some challenges this year. 3 quarantines, living in 3 states and being separated for over 3 months didn’t even come close to putting a dent in my love for you.
“Thanks for making what should have been a horrible year, completely worth it.”
Grant, meanwhile, is still with his “secret” girlfriend Lucy and the couple are even expecting their first child together.
