Anna Nicoll Smith & J.Howard Marshall (1994)
The late Anna Nicole Smith‘s wedding to 89-year-old wheelchair-bound oil tycoon, J. Howard Marshall II shocked the world. People magazine opened their article about the ‘I dos’ with, “And the bride wore cleavage”. The mother of one was branded a gold digger, but according to her, it was true love. The unlikely couple met when gave Marshall a lap dance during her shift at strip club Gigi’s in LA. According to New York Magazine, Marshall “sat crying in his wheelchair” after kissing his bride at Houston’s White Dove Wedding Chapel on June 27, 1994. She whispered, “Bye darling. I’m off to Greece,” in his ear before she jetted off for a photo shoot. The marriage only lasted 14 months before Marshall passed away. Sadly, Smith herself died at 39 in 2007 after a prescription drug overdose. She’s survived by her daughter Dannielynn Birkhead.
Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban (2006)
“She’s nervous,” was her sister Antonia’s response in the moments before Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban exchanged vows on June 25, 2006, in front of celebrities like Russell Crowe, Baz Luhrmann, Naomi Watts and Hugh Jackman in Sydney’s beach suburb of Manly. The nuptials attracted wild media attention in the lead-up to the ceremony. “A few days before [the wedding] my fiancee and I were talking about the wedding and she was worried about getting married to me, understandably,” Urban told a crowd during his 2014 Aussie tour. At the time, he was still in the midst of drug addiction. “I was trying every way I could to reassure her that I was born to be her man”. Sixteen years on and Kidman and Urban are one of Hollywood’s greatest love stories.
Princess Mary & Frederick (2004)
Where were you when Tasmania’s Mary Donaldson married Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark on May 14, 2004? It was one of history’s most memorable days. Former real estate agent Donaldson walked down the aisle in a stunning Uffe Frank gown, while Fred was in tears watching his bride approach. In his reception speech, Frederik thanked Mary’s father for making him the happiest man in the world. “Dear John, what a privilege, what a thrill, what an extraordinary feeling of happiness you have created in me,” Frederik said. “One might say Mary also belongs to you – but as of today, she belongs to me and I belong to her”. Since then, the future king and queen of Denmark, who famously met in a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympics, have welcomed four children and stand as one of the greatest royal pairings of all time.
Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker (2022)
Kourtney Kardashian never planned on getting married, but then came along Travis Barker – her longtime family friend turned unexpected soulmate. After a year of dating, the couple tied the knot at L’Olivetta, a villa in Portofino owned by Dolce & Gabbana, on May 22, 2022. “I am in one of the best places I’ve ever been in my life, and I’m focusing on now and on the future,” the bride told People magazine, after officially changing her surname to Barker. The Virgin Mary-themed nuptials will air on the second season of The Kardashians (Disney+) next month. “I wanna show this beautiful relationship that I’m in,” she gushed. The show will also detail her first and second weddings to the Blink 182 rocker. That’s right, their Portofino ceremony was actually their third! The pair married in Las Vegas in April, then in early May at a Santa Barbara courthouse. Kourtney’s ex Scott Disick, father to her three children Mason, 12, Penelope, 10, and Reign, 7, was not in attendance.
