They have sold out shows in Australia and the US, won three ARIA Awards, had a No. 1 album, and boast close to 650,000 monthly subscribers on Spotify, but Aussie musician G Flip still can’t quite believe that this is their life.

“I just never thought I’d have this many people who’d want to come to a show of mine” the 32-year-old artist, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/ them pronouns, told WHO in the lead-up to their Australian shows.

The multi-instrumentalist added that some of the places they’ll be performing are “dream venues” of theirs, including Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena, The Hordern Pavillion in Sydney and Brisbane’s Riverstage.

“I’m still in disbelief every day and I still pinch myself,” they share. “And I cry all the time. I cry on stage all the time.”

G Flip on their career beginnings

Despite the happy tears and disbelief, this was always in G’s life plan.

They have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality, getting their first drum kit at just nine years old, honing their craft and spending the whole of 2017 “locked away” writing and producing in their bedroom.

After gaining recognition through Triple J’s Unearthed competition with their track ‘About You’ in 2018, G Flip (who was born Georgia Flipo) went full steam ahead – cold emailing anyone they thought could help them achieve their goal of securing a record deal.

The eventual deal, with independent Australian label Future Classic, saw the release of 2019’s About You and 2023’s Drummer.

Their most recent offering, Dream Ride, came out in September last year through AWAL.

“I released the record and then, four or five days later, I was straight on the road touring,” G explained. “And so I feel like going on the road and touring and playing the songs every night, you see the fans’ engagement and what they gravitate towards and what lyrics they’re screaming out at the top of their lungs.”

Reflecting on getting Dream Ride out into the world – a process that took three months with the writing and subsequent culling of more than 100 songs – G insists they have remained true to their Aussie roots.

“I still have the same best friends from childhood, and I still talk and act and dress the same. I think I’ve always stayed the same person.”

G Flip on their relationship with Chrishell Stause

While G themself may not have changed terribly much, their life certainly has – most notably, in the form of their relationship with American reality TV star Chrishell Stause, who the singer-songwriter married in May 2023 after announcing their relationship a year earlier.

Fans of Stause’s hit Netflix series, Selling Sunset, might have been surprised to learn the realtor, who’d previously only been romantically involved with men was in a relationship with the Aussie drummer.

But they may be even more shocked to learn about her taste in music.

“Chrishell’s actually got quite heavy music taste,” G laughed.

“And that’s one of the reasons she kind of blew my mind when we first met because she was singing [heavy metal band] Korn.

“Her dad also played drums,” they continue. “So one of our first conversations was all about brands of drum kits because I told her I was a drummer and she said, ‘Oh, what kind of drum kit do you have?'”

“I was like, ‘Wait, am I in a dream right now?’ You’re the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen and you’re asking what brand of drum kit I have and what cymbals I play?”

The happy couple are still gushing over each other almost four years later, and, when asked how they maintain their connection when touring and filming commitments often keep them apart, G credits their love of planning and organising as helping to keep the romance alive.

“I love planning dates and booking our trips, and I like taking her out for dinner or curating little things for us,” they explaied.

“I took her to country Victoria because she really wanted to see kangaroos, so I made sure we saw kangaroos. We just do cute things.”

Fans of the genetically blessed pair may be dismayed to hear that, although they have been approached many times about starring in their own reality TV show, the musician is adamant it will never happen, telling us their relationship with Stause, 44, wouldn’t make for interesting viewing because they never argue.

“We’d have to have people around us having some feisty fights because it’s a bit too chill,” the singer joked.

G Flip on their family plans

A TV show might not be on the cards, but something the couple are committed to is becoming parents and sharing the highs and lows of their fertility journey in order to provide support and visibility for others.

“It’s not an easy road. It’s so up and down,” G said of their IVF experience. “You have good news and you have really, really bad news, and it’s just this repeated cycle that’s really hard, not only for queer couples, but for heterosexual couples as well.”

The musician explains that they and their wife “get attacked a lot online” from people who recall Stause breaking up with a past partner – likely fellow Selling Sunset star Jason Oppenheim, who she dated for around five months – because she wanted kids, and that they demand to know when she and G might add a child to their family.

“It’s like, ‘Mate, we’ve been trying,” G said. “It’s not as easy as everyone paints it out to be.

“You’ve got to lean on your people, and we really lean on each other and we talk about it openly because we want other people to hear our story and be gentle with their friends and loved ones.”

Although the spouses’ road to parenthood remains uncertain, one thing is for sure: “When we are blessed to have children, I will be writing a kids’ album,” G promised.

G Flip on their Dream Ride Tour

In the meantime, they are looking at yet another jam-packed year that will include their biggest tour to date, supported by Canadian rock band The Beaches, their annual wedding vow renewal with Stause – which the Aussie hitmaker tells us will, this year, likely have an “emo theme” in “some kind of gothic looking place” – plus plenty more writing for themselves, as well as writing and producing tracks for their friends and fellow artists.

“I just want to try to keep chipping away at this career and see how long I can do it for,” they mused. “Because I never want it to stop and I never want to stop playing shows I love being on tour and doing this as a job is such a privilege and a joy.”

G Flip’s Dream Ride Tour kicks off on Friday, Feb. 27 in Brisbane. Tickets available at TicketTek.
