Laura Dern has announced the passing of her mother, Diane Ladd.
Ladd, whose career spanned decades, died on 3 November at her home in Ojai, California. She was 89 years old.
“My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning at her home,” Laura shared in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist, and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created.”
“We were blessed to have her,” the Big Little Lies actor concluded. “She is flying with her angels now.”
Ladd’s long career spanned television, film and stage, garnering her three Academy Award nominations for her supporting performances in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), Wild at Heart (1990) and Rambling Rose (1991).
Diane and Laura appeared together in several projects, forging a rare creative partnership between mother and daughter. In Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, both of their performances earned critical recognition.
Beyond the screen, their 2023 memoir, Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love (and Banana Pudding), offered a candid portrait of their relationship, charting Diane’s health scare and the evolving dynamic between the two.
Laura paid tribute to Diane and her father, Bruce Dern, when she accepted her 2020 Academy Award for Marriage Story.
“Some say never meet your heroes; I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents,” she told the crowd while accepting the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
“I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You’ve got game. I love you.”
Diance divorced Bruce in 1969 and married William A. Shea Jr not long after. The couple then split in 1976.
In 1999, Diane married her third husband, Robert Charles Hunter. They remained married until Robert’s death this past July.
