Why you need to be watching Love Island UK

We hope the Aussie producers are taking notes.

When it comes to reality TV, we Aussies have some pretty good homegrown shows. But they are nothing on what the UK has to offer, especially when it comes to Love Island.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Love Island takes a bunch of the UK’s sexiest singletons dressed in their best swimsuits and plonks them all in a luxury Spanish villa. The aim of the game is to couple up with someone and find your match as the winning couple takes home a cash prize.

Sounds simple enough, but of course with various challengers and new hotties entering the villa every day, things get messy.

There are even Aussie and American versions of the franchise but we have to admit, the original is the best for a few reasons.

Warning, a spoiler alert is now in effect!

For starters, even though romantic love is the name of the game, the female friendships will restore your faith in humanity.

Unlike The Bachelor, it’s not all about a group of women trying to impress the same guy. Instead, the Love Island gals check in with each other constantly and are the first on the scene when one of their own is heartbroken or needs to vent.

The standouts this season are Kaz Kamwi and Liberty Poole whose pure, unadulterated joy and support is enough to warm even the deadest of hearts.

On the other end, you also see some *questionable* behaviour from the men in the villa from cheeky stirring the pot to the classic case of chasing a new girl as soon as they appear.

Every year, the men get sent to Casa Amor, another villa with a fresh batch of girls and are given the chance to stay loyal to their original partners or recouple with someone new. And this year, all the men decided to live their best “lads holiday” lives and “explore their options”.

When Liam Reardon was exposed for kissing another girl behind partner Millie Court (ironically named Lillie), his justification was that he needed to “compare” the two. Insert eye roll emoji.

Even Jake Cornish, the one guy who remained loyal to his girlfriend during Casa Amor, was slammed by viewers for persuading his fellow contestants to cheat so he’d emerge a fan favourite and have a better chance at winning the money.

It’s a good lesson for any teenage girls watching. And in their twenties, thirties and beyond.

Some of the cast have risen to icon levels for their sassy one-liners and antics that leave our minds blown.

From Faye Winter casually filing her nails shouting “NOT BOTHERED” as her fellow female islanders watched an intruder have a date with all the men through to Toby Aromolaran aggressively picking up weights after losing a sports day themed challenge and sulking when confronted by Hugo Hammond, we’ve been spoiled for choice this season.

But as well as drama, we’ve seen the highs and lows of modern dating played out in real time. Couples have overcome commitment issues and allowed themselves to be vulnerable in order to profess their feelings so the romantics will feel all the feels too.

Basically, we’re sorting you out with your next binge watch bonanza and seeing as millions around the country are in lockdown, the show came at the best time.

If the show’s good enough for Margot Robbie, it’s good enough for us!
