There were sparks, but not the good kind.

Married At First Sight episode 2 delivered everything fans expect from the experiment- romance, drama, and a moment so chaotic it nearly stopped a wedding in its tracks.

While newly matched couple Alissa and David headed off on their honeymoon and enjoyed a brief taste of post-wedding bliss, back at the altar things were far from smooth.

While expert Alessandr Rampolla tells WHO, “We had a lot of fiery, really good sexual chemistry with some of the couples, which I always strive for,” adding, “I’m going to call it, there is some love in there”, it seems unlikely that she was referring to Mel Akbay and Luke Fourniotis.

You see, Mel arrived ready for one of the biggest moments of her life, only to find herself standing alone as guests shifted uncomfortably and confusion set in. Her groom, Luke, was nowhere to be seen.

Why was Luke late for his wedding to Mel?

Very late to his own wedding, Luke finally appeared with a sheepish apology, explaining simply, “Sorry I’m late, I forgot the rings.”

It was a confession that instantly took the shine off the day, and the guests didn’t hide their disapproval, one piped up saying: “For the first day of marriage you’re awfully disorganised.”

As the ceremony continued, Mel admitted the moment felt tainted. “This is such a big event in someone’s life. How do you mess it up like that? It feels a bit ruined. But I will give him a chance,” she said, choosing optimism over walking away.

Unfortunately for Luke, the damage didn’t stop there. As Mel read her vows, an emotional moment meant to be all about connection, Luke was chewing gum, a detail that did not go unnoticed.

In an awkward attempt to fix the situation, he handed the gum to his sister mid-ceremony, leaving viewers cringing and Mel feeling increasingly unimpressed.

“I feel sick in my stomach,” she later admitted, summing up what many watching at home were likely feeling too.

With forgotten rings, a missing groom and gum-gate all unfolding in a matter of minutes, it was one thing after another for the newlyweds.

Despite the chaos, Mel chose to proceed with the wedding, but she made it clear she was unhappy with her match, telling producers that she felt no chemistry.

During the reception, Luke desperately tried to get his new bride to warm up to him, but after she declined his suggestion to go and chat to his sisters, things were not looking good.

AreLuke and Mel still together?

If episode 2 is anything to go by, this marriage is already off to a shaky start, and the season has barely begun.

And as any seasoned MAFS viewer knows, when the red flags start flying this early, the drama is only just getting started.
