We didn't see this coming... and clearly neither did the grooms.

MAFS couple Steve Powell, 50, and Rebecca Zukowski, 51, appeared to be one of the strongest couples on the show. But on Wednesday night, the groom revealed things aren’t going as well as we’d thought.

Not only did Steve surprise viewers with these revelations, but he also shocked the other grooms in the experiment, who thought they were one of the strongest couples.

It’s ‘Revelations Week’ on the show, and the men and women were separated for an activity where they each spoke to the group about the green and red flags they saw in their partners.

When Rebecca stood up, the other women cheered her on and were excited to hear how things were progressing in the relationship, unaware that Steve would tell a very different story.

“When I first saw Steve at the aisle, I was completely wrapt and taken back. I got my silver fox and I love that for me,” Rebecca told the ladies.

“Yeah, we just connected, it’s like I’ve known him for years, so I loved that for us, and I love his family values.”

Steve, meanwhile, shocked the other grooms by pushing past the green flags and racing to the red ones.

The 50-year-old said, “Rebecca is consistently that person, where [she] needs to be talking all the time… you know, there’s no downtime.

“Rebecca’s humour – I don’t understand some of her humour, sometimes it’s got a bit of a sexual innuendo to it, and I’m very conservative, so it just seems rude to me.”

He continued, “Rebecca’s not my usual type, and what I mean by that, is her personality’s less conservative than mine.”

Scott told the cameras, “It’s quite hard to get my head across, because at the dinner party, Rebecca and Steve looked like proper husband and wife.”

Steve added, “On top of that… her emotions are very high and very low. I’m not sure what I’m gonna get and that worries me, you kind of lose a bit of trust?

“Because you’re not sure the person you’re going to wake up next to.”

“Rebecca’s very opinionated, a bit more outspoken, I’m not, I’m almost the opposite of that,” he said.

“It’s just such a shock that a relationship from the outside looked very strong, had sides that none of us were seeing,” David told the cameras. “It’s just crazy to me.”

Rebecca believes she and Steve are ‘doing so well’

Meanwhile, Rebecca said that while she and Steve haven’t been intimate yet, she’s happy with where things stand.

“We’re gold, and we’re going to get to platinum in a couple of days,” she said. “We’re doing so well, so I’m here for it.”

However, Steve continued to voice his concerns.

“It’s just been a lot. Rebecca’s been a lot in general,” Steve added, saying he thought his ‘wife’ needed to “slow it down a bit” and lower her expectations around intimacy.

“I’m quite slow in that process, because I need to be sure,” he said. “I’m trying to do the right thing, Rebecca’s just been a bit impatient and that has affected our relationship.

“That to me is a red flag.”

He told the producers that the affection and intimacy he was already showing were all he could offer.

When Scott asked if Steve “felt positive” about the relationship, he said he and Rebecca have an “amazing friendship”, but added that it currently felt like they take “one step forward and two steps back”.

MAFS viewers slam Steve over ‘red flag’ comments

The shock moment divided MAFS viewers, with one Facebook user saying, “Knew he was too good to be true.”

Another added, “The 50 + men who come on the show say they want to find someone who has the same interests and shares their lives with.

“But what they really mean is that they want that with a younger woman. They seem to leave that bit out.”

“You could see this at the wedding,” wrote a third.

Others suggested that “older” men are “set in their ways”.

Some viewers defended him, saying, “Poor guy, I would have walked by now.”

“He’s being honest,” another said.

A third added, “You can tell from his body language in a few of the scenes that he is clearly not into her at all.”

Someone else joked, “You know when it starts great for a couple, that it’s absolutely going to be hell in about two weeks.”
