From a secret stint in rehab to a feud that was too rogue to air, there have been multiple theories as to why Married At First Sight production was forced to come to a sudden halt halfway through filming.

Thankfully, MAFS bad boy David Cannon has finally cleared the air, revealing he was actually the reason behind the executive producers’ decision to shut the show down for two weeks.

In an explosive interview with news.com.au, the truck driver revealed his marriage to Hayley Vernon was so traumatising and toxic it took a serious toll on his mental health. This, coupled with having to live with the bodybuilder full time eventually forced him to sit down with producers and negotiate how he’d be able to exit the experiment once and for all.

“The truth was, I was at the verge of a mental breakdown, I had been spoken to like a piece of sh*t for several weeks, so they put me in a separate apartment and we agreed upon some terms about how I was going to move forward,” David said on news.com.au’s Not Here To Make Friends podcast.

He continued: “We agreed that whatever Hayley said, I would be allowed to leave … That’s what happened in the two weeks of shut down, coming to that agreement.”

In a recent radio interview, Michael Goonan— who secretly hooked up with David’s TV wife, Hayley Vernon— echoed a similar sentiment, revealing MAFS producers were forced to go back to the drawing board after the contestants’ “storylines had deviated or gone off the rails”.

“There was that much stuff that happened off-camera that wasn’t captured in the moment so production had to have multiple meetings and work out where everyone’s storyline is, because a lot of storylines had deviated or gone off the rails,” Michael said when asked if he was behind the halt.

“People being in each other’s rooms, people going out together, people going out to bars together. You’ve got all these storylines of people being with other groups interacting with each other, mostly just as friends. (But) remember, it’s like being in a jail cell for three months, you’re gonna want to knock on Bubba’s room next door and go out for a few.”

In October 2019, a seemingly reliable source said they took a break from filming because one cast member was forced into rehab over concerns for their mental wellbeing.

“Apparently, they’ve just started filming again after a two-week break because the producers were just like, ‘’this is going too far, we need to resettle ourselves, take a two-week filming break and then work out how we can tackle the rest of the season,’” Hit106.9 host Gill said.

“Apparently, they needed to check someone in [to a rehab facility] because they were so loose on the show that they were worried about their health.”

MAFS expert John Walsh later denied these rumours, providing a completely different explanation as to why filming was postponed.

“No, that’s not right,” John told News.com.au about the rehab rumours. “We did stop for a while. Dates change and things change in the schedule, but we’ve never stopped the show because of drama.

“In fact, if there’s drama, we’d want to keep filming.”
