EXCLUSIVE: Coles breaks silence on $22 MasterChef pie backlash with surprising sales update

Coles told WHO that Hannah's cheeseburger pie has already sold more than 50 per cent of the limited stock.

Not one but two MasterChef products were made available at Coles this year after the supermarket quickly sold out of last season’s item (Laura Sharrad’s Sticky Date Pudding & Butterscotch Sauce Ice Cream).

After the 2026 hopeful cooks were challenged to make either an ice cream or a pie, it was Pat and Hannah who were victorious, with Hannah’s cheeseburger pie particularly revered by the judges for its uniqueness.

Yet fans were quick to complain about it not being a new invention at all and said the $22 price tag for the pies was too expensive.

Despite the grievances, Coles told WHO that since landing on shelves nationwide on Monday, almost half of the pie stock has been sold.

Why were MasterChef fans complaining about the pie?

While the judges were thrilled with Hannah’s pie choice, fans were divided on whether they thought her idea was worthy of the win, and calling out that it wasn’t that “revolutionary”.

Meanwhile, some who actually bought the pie from Coles and tried it themselves were unsatisfied.

“Was very disappointed in the pie. It was sloppy, and the bottom pastry was very thick, with no flavour of a cheeseburger,” one customer wrote online.

“The pastry was ordinary, the filling was nothing like what was presented to the judges, [and] once you cut through the pastry, the filling flowed out,” another said.

It’s the latest complaint fans have had this season, with viewers unhappy about everything from the judges’ fashion choices to the lack of hygiene in the kitchen.

Coles denies claims the pie isn’t selling well

After fans online suggested the pie wasn’t selling from the supermarket, WHO reached out to Coles for comment, and it confirmed it wasn’t the case.

“Our customers are loving Hannah’s Cheeseburger Pie, with more than 50 per cent of available stock sold through in the first four days,” a Coles spokesperson told us.

“The MasterChef range is a limited-edition collaboration that gives customers the opportunity to try winning creations from the MasterChef kitchen at home. This year marks the first time we’ve brought a winning MasterChef pie to customers, offering something different from our everyday range for a limited time only.”

Meanwhile, Hannah previously told WHO the sweet motivation behind making the savoury pie, saying that when she and her fellow contestants were instructed to make a “family pie”, she immediately thought of something that her four young children would actually eat.

“I’ve always played around with cheeseburger flavours and, like, sausage rolls and pizzas and different things, just for a bit of fun – and the kids love it,” she told us. “As soon as I knew it was a pie challenge, I was like, ooh, I reckon I could try and make a pie taste like a cheeseburger as well.”

Sounds like a winning idea to us – and now she has the (Coles) receipts to prove it!
