It’s been 15 years since the release of Bridesmaids, and stars Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy and Ellie Kemper reunited on the Oscars stage on Monday (Australia time) to present the awards for Best Sound and Best Score.
“We are so happy to all be here together tonight. I cannot believe that it’s been 15 years,” Kristen said. ‘Now, we are not good with numbers, but we figured out backstage that means we shot this movie in 1883.”
The ladies then read fake “notes” from people in the audience, with Maya beginning with hers.
“Well, mine says, ‘First of all, you ladies look extremely beautiful tonight.’ Oh, that’s nice. ‘You’re all aging well. Signed, Stellan Skarsgård.'”
Rose continued, “Oh, this one’s for me. ‘Rose, can you please stop looking at me? The eye contact is too much. I’m thinking of leaving. I’m so uncomfortable. Sincerely, Leonardo Dicaprio.’ I apologize, I have been staring at you. I thought you were somebody else.”
Melissa continued: “I have to say, mine is almost impossible to read. The handwriting is really pretty terrible. It says, ‘Hi, I’m with Stellan Skarsgård writing my own separate note. I also agree you ladies look radiant. All the things you’ve done to your faces are very tasteful. Yours truly, Elle Fanning.'”
After a brief pause, she continued, “OK, wait, there’s more. It says, ‘Just kidding, it’s me again, Stellan Skarsgård.’ Come on!”
Kristen added, “OK, mine’s short. ‘You guys have been talking for a long time. This bit could have been a lot shorter. This is really going on and on. You aren’t even talking about score. That’s all. Love you lots! Benicio del Toro. Or, for those of you who refuse to learn Spanish, it’s Benedict of the Bull.'”
Ellie also shared one, “Well, this last one is quick. It just says, ‘I’m tired and I want to go home. This show is very long and there’s no pizza. Signed, the kid from Hamnet.’ He’s right.”
Fans divided over Bridesmaids reunion at the Oscars
Fans shared their love of the moment, with one person writing on X, “This Bridesmaids reunion at the Oscars is SO important to me.”
Another agreed, writing, “The Bridesmaids segment being the funniest thing that has happened thus far let’s me know that it’s time for a woman to host again.”
“I’ve seen enough, give us Bridesmaids 2 right now,” quipped a third.
However, others were less impressed, with another adding, “Queens of comedy on that stage and yet still not funny. Huge missed opportunity for this boring show. Who wrote this year’s ceremony?”
“These jokes are old and boring, OK we get it women aging so funny… like am I missing something?” someone else wrote.
Fans were even more upset when the K-Pop Demon Hunters team were cut off during their acceptance speech for Best Song.
“Cutting people off during their acceptance speeches but let the cast of Bridesmaids do a ten-minute bit?” one fan questioned.
“I blame that Bridesmaids segment for cutting to people’s speech time,” yet another said.
Why did Wendi McLendon-Covey not make an appearance at the Oscars?
Wendi McLendon-Covey was noticeably absent during the reunion, which was apparently due to a ‘scheduling conflict’.
“I just heard that she was not available,” Bridesmaids director Paul Feig told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet. “She might even be traveling, I’m not sure. But we will miss her terribly because I love Wendi.”
Wendi has not commented on missing the reunion.
