You’ve seen one wildlife series presented by the inimitable Sir David Attenborough, you’ve seen them all, right? Wrong. New Netflix series Our Planet comes at things from a very different angle – one that is incredibly relevant today. Watch the trailer below.
What’s different about this latest docuseries? It ticks all the usual boxes – pristine visuals, up-close access, concise storytelling – but the eight parts focus on habitats that support a wide array of wildlife.
Showing the interconnectedness between habitat and animals, and the impact environmental factors have on both, it is essential viewing in the era of climate change debate. Even the Royal Family, who turned up to the series’ premiere and are pictured below with Attenborough, agree.

It is impossible to deny what is happening to Earth when it is shown so vividly – and so worryingly. Our Planet provides a stern warning for the future. (On Netflix from Fri., Apr. 5) 4.5 stars

After cutting his teeth on teen titles Smash Hits and TV Hits (remember them?) in the 2000s, Gavin moved into weekly magazines, working for TV Week for many years and continuing to contribute to that title to this day, and writing for Who, Woman’s Day, New Idea and OK over the past decade or so. He’s also worked for digital outlets, writing and editing for SBS, Pedestrian and Who.com.au, and has hosted and produced TV and music podcasts. Entertainment in all its forms has been Gavin’s focus, whether that be interviewing the latest eliminated contestant from Survivor; reviewing the newest films, TV series and albums; writing opinion pieces about streaming platforms and their offerings; or talking to Australian pop stars past and present about their musical journey. As a long-time freelancer, Gavin goes where the work takes him, with one hand on the remote and the other scrolling through his phone for entertainment updates.
