Why anyone would want to relive their torturous high school experience is unclear, but that’s exactly what creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle do in new comedy series PEN15. Watch the trailer below.
Despite being in their early 30s, the duo re-immerse themselves in their Year 7 lives, Mandy Moore and *NSYNC soundtrack and all, playing versions of their teenage selves. Set in 2000, PEN15 covers all those embarrassing moments from becoming a teenager and trying so desperately to fit in and be cool. Despite treading such familiar – for them, and for viewers who have been well serviced by high-school shows – terrain, PEN15 offers a fresh perspective thanks to the comic voices of the show’s likable leads.
It’s also refreshing to see Erskine and Konkle surrounded onscreen by kids that actually look 13, instead of the normal situation where every single character on a teen show is played by adult actors. The fact that the two women blend in is a credit to both their youthful appearance and some great use of braces and bad hairstyles. (On Stan from Sun., Feb. 10) 4 stars
