It’s what every fan of Farmer Wants a Wife hopes for – to see their favourite couples walk off into the sunset and live happily ever after.
And while the popular reality TV show has had an incredible strike rate when it comes to that, it isn’t always the way.
That was sadly the case for Farmer Brenton Kuch and Sophie Holcombe from the 2023 season, who have since gone very separate ways.
So, what have Brenton and Sophie been up to since declaring their love on national TV – and why did they split?
Darriman, Victoria farmer Brenton met and fell in love with social media manager Sophie on the 2023 season of the show.
Brenton confessed in episode two that he was smitten as soon as he saw her picture in the applications.
‘’I’ve got the feels, that’s it,’’ he added after meeting her and going on their first 24-hour solo date.
‘’Done and dusted.’’
Some viewers were wary that city slicker Sophie, who talked about her desire to travel the world, would ever really be able to settle down on a rural farm, despite having grown up on one.
But she remained Brenton’s favourite throughout the show, and in the final episode he declared: ‘’I’ve never felt like this with anyone … You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met. I’m falling in love with you.’’
Sophie responded: ‘’You are everything I was looking for … You’re making me the happiest girl in the world.’’
So what on earth happened?
Why did Brenton and Sophie split?
Fans began wondering if something was amiss when Sophie and Brenton’s Instagram failed to regularly show them living a loved-up farm life together, as is expected after the TV show ends.
And just months after the 2023 season went to air, Sophie shocked her Instagram followers by announcing that she and Brenton had split.
‘’With a heavy heart, I want to let everyone know Brenton and I have gone our separate ways,’’ she wrote.
‘’Reg (her dog) and I loved our life in Darriman and have been missing the farm a lot.
‘’It’s a disappointing ending, but I’ve learned a lot about myself and my values.
‘’I wish Brenton all the best and want to thank everyone for their support, especially my family and friends.’’
Sophie didn’t give a specific reason for the split, but fans reading between the lines noted her mention of learning more about her own ‘’values’’.
While Sophie’s post sounded amicable enough, it seems the break-up wasn’t quite as harmonious as many thought.
Farmer Brenton did not release a statement, but later posted a cryptic message on Instagram about ‘’dodging a bullet’’, leaving many fans wondering if he was referring to Sophie.
What happened to Farmer Brenton?
Farmer Brenton went to ground on social media, occasionally posting pictures from his time on the show and mentioning what ‘’great friends’’ he had made, but no mention of Sophie.
‘’Still up there with some of the best times and best people,’’ he wrote after news of his split with Sophie went public.
Since then, he’s made less than 10 social media posts giving followers an update on his life.
In one photo, posted in September last year, Brenton caught up with fellow FWAW stars Farmer Brad, Farmer Matt and Olivia at a race day in Wagga Wagga.
Another post shows him celebrating his sister’s birthday.
It was a post in March this year that got tongues wagging, however.
Brenton shared several pictures from a CMC Rocks concert with his arm around one of the other contestants on the show, Rachel (whose identical twin, Chelsea, was a contestant on the same season).
Followers went wild in the comments section, saying Brenton should have chosen Rachel from the start.
‘’Please say you are with Rachel!’’ one fan wrote.
‘’She was my first choice for you!’’ added another.
What happened to Sophie?
As for Sophie, she has been much more active on social media, giving fans regular updates on her post-FWAW life.
One of the first things Sophie did was switch from brunette to blonde, giving herself a glow-up that fans adored.
She found a job in the Gippsland region, continued to dote on her beloved dog Reg, and started going out for glamorous nights on the town with her girlfriends.
In December, Sophie posted a photo of herself staring up adoringly at a tall, handsome man, whom she later revealed was her boyfriend.
‘’Celebrating loveeee,’’ she wrote on February 19, sharing a pic with her partner at a wedding.
On March 11 Sophie shared some happy snaps of the couple together at Squeaky Beach in Wilson’s Promontory.
On June 1, Sophie shared a picture of herself enjoying a margarita.
‘’As happy as a kid with a pop top,’’ the picture was captioned.
It looks like Sophie might just have found her happy place – just not, as it turns out, with Farmer Brenton.
