The Traitors Australia isn’t like other reality TV shows.
Besides the premise of the show being quite unique already – that is, there aren’t many shows that physically trap players in a manor for weeks as they slowly get murdered or banished one by one – season three of the series has also been praised by contestants for being fun, fair, and a faithful depiction of the famous personalities on our screens; an outcome many reality TV stars are not used to at all.
However, on top of the authentic edit from production, Lawson Mahoney — previously from Made in Bondi — spoke exclusively to WHO about all of the other surprises that led to his downfall in the final days of the show.
“I thought I’d be censored much like the experience that I’ve had before,” Lawson told WHO, describing how in the past, he’s been portrayed as “borderline vanilla”.
“The ability to keep everyone’s personality very, very real-life-like is something shows get wrong all the time, on purpose, most likely, like a lot of shows do that for entertainment’s sake; villainise and whatnot.
“But in this case, I’m sure people would be unhappy with moments, but for the most part, I see someone on screen, and that is how they are and how I met them, which is a testament to the production company and the lovely people who are on the show and a part of it.”
How was Lawson eliminated from The Traitors?
Lawson’s strategy on The Traitors was to “play dumb” and last long enough so no one thought he was a threat.
This earned him a lot of points with fans who grew to love his character.
“The biggest shock for me with this show is genuinely liking Lawson who comes from a Bondi reality show,” one fan wrote online.
“Me too!” another chimed in response.
“Lawson was a fun character, I shall miss him,” a third agreed.
While this “dumb” character got him far, as soon as he started speaking up and stopped holding his tongue when it came to strategizing, things went sideways for this fan-favourite.
“I thought my buffoonery at that scroll mission put all the heat on me,” he admitted, joking that it would’ve been a pretty “forgettable” way to go out.
After ultimately surviving the night and seeing Rachael get banished, he described his relief like “walking on water”.
Unfortunately for Lawson, this feeling didn’t last long.
In the end, he was betrayed by those he described as his “closest friends”, Josh Packham and Tully Smyth, who steered the group to vote him out at the Round Table.

While getting betrayed by your friends isn’t a surprise anyone wants to experience, Lawson admitted that there was one moment that spooked him more.
“Keira, figuring out telepathically that I’m a good chess player was the biggest shock to me,” he confessed.
“I told no one in the entire crew or cast, because I was playing dumb, that I’m quite a good chess player. Professional? Hell no. My Elo [chess rating] is like 1200, really not that good, but it’s in the top avenue for chess players.”
You’ve got to hand it to Keira! She’s intuitive…even if the information she uncovers doesn’t get the result she needs.
