On June 23, 1993, an instance of domestic violence made headlines around the world – Lorena Bobbitt severed husband John’s penis with a knife while he was asleep. Watch the trailer for new docuseries Lorena, which covers the case, below.
As well as the media storm it created, the incident provided fodder for talk shows, stand-up comics and anyone with an opinion. Which was everyone.
This four-part documentary, featuring extensive interviews with the former couple as well as police, lawyers and those associated with the case, takes viewers through the initial act, and the legal and medical aftermath.
It also delves into the Bobbitts’ relationship to work out why Lorena did what was to men everywhere the unthinkable.
Given the still-shocking nature of the case, there’s a certain amount of giggle-stifling in Lorena, but the tone takes a turn for the serious when it deals with the allegations of rape and abuse levelled against John by Lorena. (On Amazon Prime from Fri., Feb. 15) 4 stars
