She plays Betty Cooper’s mum Alice in the hit Netflix series, Riverdale. But believe it or not, Mädchen Amick nearly took on the role of Carrie Bradshaw in the hit HBO series Sex and the City!
In 1995, Amick starred in the prime time television soap opera Central Park West.
Set in Manhatten, the popular series followed affluent New Yorker Carrie Fairchild. When the show ended, Amick explained that her character was supposed to transform into Carrie Bradshaw. Naturally, she was offered the part!
“I was offered it but it was hard at the time for me because my kids were really young,” she told PEOPLE. “It was even hard for me filming Central Park West. I couldn’t do another hour long show so I turned it down.”
While she agrees she made the right decision putting her family and her children first, the actress— who is best known for her role in the cult television series Twin Peaks— said it hurt watching the show blow up!
“Yep, It was hard, I didn’t watch it much,” she said with a laugh. “I absolutely hand it to Sarah Jessica Parker. It was her showpiece. She is absolutely brilliant in it,” she continued.
Although she missed out on a career advancing opportunity, Amick has resolidified her fan base since appearing as Mrs Cooper on Riverdale.
“It is so fun for me as an actor,” she said of playing the mum. “I never quite know when a script comes what Alice is going to do. I get bored with roles quickly, especially when you are on an ongoing series so I love that I never know what Alice is going to do next.”
However, Amick was initially hesitant to star in the teen drama.
“I was worried you sort of think, kid show, playing a parent, is there really going to be much of a part?” she told MSN. “But when I was told she is going to be someone who tries so hard to have this perfect persona but will be a hot mess underneath, I was like ‘sign me up.’ She has so many layers.”
