It seems no one has worked as hard as Rick on The Block this season. Viewers continue to point out just how much he does for his and Tayla’s renovations, with the 62-year-old often pushing himself to his limits to get the job done.
It’s something that even foreman Dan pulled him aside about, with the tradie concerned that Rick was working at a capacity he wouldn’t be able to sustain.
Now, Tayla told WHO that she was “forced” to get production involved after her dad continued to prioritise their renovations over his health, and thank goodness she did, because it could have been fatal if she hadn’t.
Rick admits he ‘could have died’ while filming The Block
While renovating the living, dining and alfresco area, the builder picked up a leg infection. However, he continued to work against his better judgement, eager not to spend money from their budget on tradies, especially when he deemed himself fit enough to do it.
After repeatedly telling him to slow down and physically “put his leg up”, Tayla got production involved when he continued to ignore her.
Finally, she got him to the hospital.
“He wouldn’t have gone and he potentially would have ended up with sepsis… If I had not forced production to take you to the doctor, well, I told them to take you straight to the hospital, but you ended up going to the emergency doctor first for two hours.
“And then they sent you straight to the hospital, which I told them to do.
“Dad could have literally been in a much worse condition. He could have died,” Tayla said, with Rick agreeing in the background.

It’s a sobering thought, and Tayla was so relieved that production did step in when they did, praising them for how supportive they’ve been.
Rick was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago, but has remained relatively active since, explaining he’s always had a strong work ethic.
