The Voice Australia 2026 has officially come to an end, with Yung Milla making history as the first rapper and Indigenous Australian to win the competition.
The Marranunggu hip-hop artist from Darwin walked away with $100,000 in prize money and an all-inclusive recording development package after taking out the title in Sunday night’s Grand Finale.
But for Yung Milla, winning The Voice was about much more than taking home the trophy.
Throughout his time on the show, he has spoken about the power of music, the importance of sharing his story and wanting to give people in his community something to connect with.
Speaking to WHO after his win, the rapper opened up about the people who have connected with his music throughout his The Voice journey, and one particular fan message that almost had him in tears.
The emotional fan message that stayed with Yung Milla
Yung Milla may have been the one standing on stage when his name was announced as the winner, but he knows his journey has meant something to the people watching at home, too.
The winner received messages from fans who connected with the stories he shared through his music and the experiences he spoke about while on the singing competition.
But one message in particular stayed with him.
Yung Milla revealed that a fan with a brain tumour had reached out to him with a heartbreaking request. Before he passed away, the fan wanted to see Yung Milla win The Voice.
“I’ve had so many messages come through and they’re talking about how the things I talk about is similar things that they’re going through,” he told WHO.
“And yeah, I’ve had someone text me about a brain tumour and he, sorry I’m getting a little bit upset, he was saying before he passes on, he wants to see me win.”
Yung Milla became emotional as he recalled the message, which came before he even knew how his journey on the show would end. It was a powerful reminder of the connection music can create between an artist and the people listening.
For Yung Milla, that connection has always been at the heart of his music. Throughout the competition, he has used his platform to share his story, his culture and the experiences of people back home in Darwin.
And now, after taking home The Voice crown, he has the chance to share that message with an even bigger audience.

While millions of Australians watched Yung Milla’s historic win unfold, the rapper had a very special audience cheering him on from home. His Grand Finale was screened at a community event in Darwin, where locals came together to watch their hometown artist compete for the title.
The rapper admitted the experience was both “overwhelming and stressful”, but said he was incredibly grateful to have his hometown behind him.
“Yeah, it was both. It was overwhelming but I was just so grateful to have my hometown support me,” he said.
But it wasn’t just the support for him that made the night so meaningful. Yung Milla said seeing his community come together for something positive was what really stood out.
“I think the most important thing that stood out to me was seeing everybody come together at a community event for something positive,” he said.
“There’s never events like this that happen in Darwin so I was just so grateful to be a part of something to bring the community together for a positive thing.”
After spending weeks away from home filming the competition, being able to celebrate the biggest moment of his career alongside his own community made the win even more special.
“There’s no place I’d rather be in the world than my home and celebrate with my people,” he said. “So just to have that chance to celebrate with them last night, I just feel so grateful and blessed.”
‘This is just a start’ for Yung Milla
Now that the confetti has been swept up and the trophy is officially his, Yung Milla is still trying to process what happened.
“I feel grateful and blessed. It’s never one emotion. It’s mixed emotions. Quite overwhelming almost but yeah, I feel very grateful,” he said.
And judging by his phone, the messages haven’t stopped coming.
“My phone is dinging off right now as we speak,” he laughed.
Still, Yung Milla knows winning The Voice isn’t the end of his story. In fact, he sees it as the beginning of something much bigger.
“Yeah, well, I’m going to try and take it in. I haven’t took it in yet, but yeah, we’ve got a lot planned,” he said.
“You know, this is, even though The Voice is finished, this is just a start. This is where I’m going to keep building and there’s many, many things to come.”

Of course, Yung Milla’s Voice journey wouldn’t have been complete without his coach Melanie C.
The Spice Girls star supported him throughout the competition, describing him as a genuinely lovely person who remained humble and down to earth.
“Yeah, well, first off, she’s a great human being, but she is so humble, so down to earth and I still get nervous when I’m around her,” he said. “No matter how many times I’ve seen her, I still got nervous, but yeah, there’ll be many things to come.”
Melanie C also reached out to Yung Milla after his win to congratulate him on the huge achievement.
“She reached out to me last night, which was so nice. She’s congratulating me and yeah, she’s awesome.”
After everything he experienced throughout his time on The Voice, Yung Milla now has a national audience behind him, a community celebrating with him and plenty more music to come. And if his time on the show proved anything, it’s that his voice has already reached far beyond the stage.
