There’s already enough pressure that comes with stepping onto The Voice stage and performing in front of five coaches. But choosing to sing one of Melanie C’s own songs right in front of her? That’s a whole other level of nerves.
That’s exactly what The Voice contestant Edde Masson did when she took on Melanie C’s hit I Turn To You, delivering a breathtaking reinvention of the song that had all five coaches hooked.
The 32-year-old Queensland mum built the performance layer by layer using her vocal looping skills, transforming the familiar hit into something that felt completely her own.
And Melanie didn’t hesitate. She was the first coach to turn her chair.
By the end of the performance, all five coaches had turned, leaving Edde with the rather enviable problem of choosing which team she wanted to join. But, let’s be real, I think we all knew who she was choosing.
It wasn’t just the coaches who were impressed, either, with one fan declaring it “the best audition ever”.
However, Melanie C told WHO how she really feels about contestants tackling one of her songs.

For Melanie, hearing one of her own songs performed back to her isn’t quite as straightforward as it might seem.
“It’s a difficult position to be in because you do feel under pressure,” Melanie told WHO.
“You know, obviously, they’re a fan of your music and you want to turn for them. But I think this year I’ve been, I think we’ve all been more ruthless.”
And that’s where things get interesting.
Melanie explained that the format has changed this year. As a result, the coaches have had to be even more selective about who they turn for, regardless of whether they’re performing one of their own songs.
“There are certain aspects to the show that have changed this year,” she admitted. “It’s put a little bit more pressure on the coaches so I think we were being even more ruthless on whether we were going to turn or not. Whether they’re singing your song or not.”
So while Edde had the added pressure of singing a Melanie C classic to Melanie C herself, she still had to prove she could make it her own. And honestly, I don’t know about you, but I got literal goosebumps listening to the audition.
Tones And I called the audition a beautiful experience, while Ronan declared it one of the best auditions he’d ever seen on The Voice and said Edde could win the competition.
Kate praised her artistry as “the antithesis of karaoke”, while Richard called her performance hauntingly perfect.
For Melanie, there was something particularly special about hearing her own song transformed into something completely new. She called Edde’s arrangement “magical” before welcoming her to Team Melanie.
And honestly, if you’re going to sing your coach’s own song on The Voice, getting all five chairs to turn feels like a pretty good way to pull it off.
