The ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting a new card-holding member, and we’re very excited to meet her.
While it can be cheesy to see a superhero storyline tied into a coming-of-age story, we trust in the power of Marvel for all the excellent stories they’ve given us over the years, and their new, emerging focus on female characters.
We’ve had both Captain Marvel and Black Widow get their own films, and now Ms. Marvel is joining the mega-franchise with a TV series, available via Disney Plus.
Just like Peter Parker before her, Ms. Marvel is a teenage superhero trying to balance the pressures of high school, family life, and her newfound superpowers.
Going from a girl who feels like she doesn’t fit in, to one with superpowers, we’ll be charting Kamala’s heartwarming story from when it drops on June 8.

Who is Ms. Marvel?
While most characters in the MCU have a storied past, and have existed in the comics for quite some time, Kamala’s character has only been around for nine years.
She first appeared in the Captain Marvel comics in August of 2013, and came to life through her own comic series, Ms. Marvel, which first came out in February of 2014.
Kamala is a Pakistani American teenager from Jersey City, New Jersey, who discovers her ability to shapeshift due to inhumman genes, which follow on from an earlier storyline.
Prior to debuting Kamala, Marvel garnered excitement among their fans by announcing that a Muslim character would be the star of their own comic book series.
Her popularity has led to the inception of the show, where Kamala is portrayed by Iman Vellani.

What is Ms. Marvel about?
From what we can tell, the series will chart Kamala’s growth as she discovers she has superpowers.
Her 2013 inception means she’s a total Gen Z, and a little bit of a geek as well, with interests like gaming, and reading and writing fan-fiction. She’s also a superhero fanatic with a big imagination, and a particularly big fan of Captain Marvel, or Carol Danvers.
And while the rest of the world wants her to stop dreaming her life away, it seems that’s Kamala’s greatest strength.

What’s next for Ms. Marvel?
Just because we’ve finished The Avengers, doesn’t mean Marvel is showing any signs of slowing down.
The Marvels, slated for a 2023 release, will be both the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, and a continuation of Ms. Marvel’s arc.
It will star both Iman and Brie Larson, who portrays Captain Marvel. Also returning will be Samuel L. Jackson in his famed role as Nick Fury, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, who we got to know in WandaVision.
