GUY AND JULES: A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES
Guy and Jules have long been open about how much they like and respect each other as people. This, in addition to both placing value in always keeping the communication lines between one another open is what they believe, has kept their relationship strong over the years.
As they grow together, they admit they continue to discover new traits in one another that they find attractive.
“I probably noticed his character and that he was a good person at the start but I probably didn’t know it in as much detail as I know now watching how Guy lives his life, how he interacts with people, his integrity, his patience, his professionalism,” Jules tells WHO.
“All those things, I sort of subconsciously knew that was inside of him but it was never really brought to the surface until life really kicked off and all those things were put to the test and he really has just remained a good person at the end of it all. Not that we’re at the end of it all!”
For Guy, he has a lot of respect for how Jules has transitioned into motherhood – something that he hadn’t thought about much when it came to qualities he admired at the beginning of their relationship all those years ago.
“Jules was a tomboy growing up. You know how some women growing up are kind of like, ‘I just can’t wait to be a mum. That’s all I want, I want to be in the mum’s group, I want to wheel the pram in my workout gear and I want to be that person.’? Whereas Jules was petrified of it,” Guy tells us of when they first got together.
“She understood it was a massive responsibility and I never heard the words ‘I want to be mum’ ever come out of her mouth because I think she was scared that she wouldn’t do a good job.”
Despite Jules' initial reservations, Guy says she has taken to parenting like a complete natural.
“The thing that I’ve seen her do unbelievably well is be a mum,” he gushes.
“I think you have a newfound love for your partner when you see them in a role like that – nurturing and looking after the people that matter the most to you. She’s killing it!”
And although Jules confesses she’d be keen for the couple to renew their vows at some point in the future (“I think that would be a nice thing to do!” she spills), Guy is less convinced about the prospect of walking down the aisle a second time.
“I would not do that,” Guy insists. “You have a wedding! I just feel like it’s too self-important or something, having to announce to the world that you love each other again. You’ve done it once… no one really cared back then, so why?”
He adds, sheepishly: “I don’t know, I just get a bit embarrassed at the thought of someone going, ‘Why would anyone care?’”
A BROTHERS BOND LIKE NO OTHER
For a while now, Jules has been making a name for herself in the public eye not just for her styling prowess but also her shareable IG TV home cooking content.
But she’s not the only Sebastian family member aside from Guy to be thrust into the spotlight.
Guy’s younger brother Chris Sebastian caused a stir in 2020 when he competed on and won The Voice, where Guy was employed as one of the show’s coaches.
Thanks to the brothers being seen together on screen – not to mention Guy breaking down in tears at the sight of Chris performing - an interest was sparked in the Sebastian brothers’ dynamic.
As well as Chris, 35, Guy has two other brothers: Ollie, 43, and Jeremy, 33, and they all share an incredibly close bond – much like Australia’s most famous siblings, the Hemsworths.
“Look, if we all looked like the Hemsworths, I think we would all be a bigger topic than we are,” Guy laughs at the comparison.
“I think that the thing that I’m happy that people know is just how close we are. I feel like brotherhood is such an unbreakable bond.”
This close sibling friendship is something Guy is hoping to pass down to his own children, Hudson and Archie.
“I’m always saying to the two boys… they’re two years apart and they’re always fighting but when it crosses the line, I’m always like… especially to Hudson, poor kid, he’s the oldest so he gets the brunt of the discussions like, ‘Dude you’re his brother, brothers are for life, you cannot speak to him like that, you’ve got to look out for him.’”
He continues: “And I see it in my dad. My dad he hates it when we [me and my brothers] fight. It’s the absolute worst thing that could possibly happen if he thinks that we’re not close and a lot of our conversations with my dad is always hoping that we’re all getting along and hoping that we’re all close because he’s desperate for that and that’s really been passed on to me.”
JULES AND THE IN-LAWS
The close friendship the Sebastian brothers enjoy is also something that has extended to the relationships between their wives.
In fact, Jules’ friendship with one of the Sebastian brothers’ partners actually pre-dates her romance with Guy.
“I feel very lucky to have married into such a tight-knit family and my sister-in-law, who’s married to Guy’s oldest brother, I’ve actually known her since I was five years old, we grew up together."
“We knew each other before we knew the boys so I feel like she’s just my person. We’re very similar age bracket and our kids are similar ages so we’ve been through the marriages and the pregnancies and the mothering and all the stages together so that’s been really cool to have someone who really, truly knows you from your childhood right through to everything that’s happened in each other’s lives so we’re really tight.”
As for the other women to have entered the Sebastian family over the years, Jules is just as complimentary.
“The other two, they’re just legends. It’s just jackpot! When Chris started dating Tash, we were like, ‘Don’t stuff this up man! She’s excellent. We don’t want to lose her out of this crew so make sure you treat her well,’” Jules laughs.
“And the youngest one, Emma, we actually get mistaken for each other quite a lot because we look really similar. So I’m always teasing Jeremy. I told Jeremy it’s because you had such a big crush on me that you had to marry my twin!”
KIDDING AROUND: LIFE WITH HUDSON AND ARCHIE
As well as jam-packed careers, hardworking parents Guy and Jules juggle their responsibilities with parenting their two sons, Hudson, eight, and Archie, six.
While they try to stay on the same page as much as possible, the pair admit that sometimes they disagree on the best way to parent their children.
“If we do disagree on something, we try to have a private conversation about that and not discuss that in front of the children because then they’re kind of involved in the weakness of the whole situation,” Jules explains.
Guy emphasises one thing they would never do is fall into the “good cop/bad cop” trap.
“You naturally gravitate towards wanting to have them like you. So it’s tough when you’re just being that one parent that’s letting the other be the one that isn’t liked all the time,” he says.
“I think the worst thing you can do as a couple, because that’s when your own relationship deteriorates, is just one parent lets the other take up all the slack when it comes to actually disciplining your kid and telling them things they don’t want to hear. I feel like we’re pretty good.”
When it comes to the kids, one front they are united on however, is their health and the couple were announced as Nature’s Way Kids Smart ambassadors in 2021.
Guys and Jules are on board with Kids Smart vitamins and supplements for children as they find it’s an easy way to stay on top of the boys’ nutrition and health.
“We approach health and wellness in our family as kind of a wholistic, healthy balance. We are very active in our family, the kids play a lot of sport. Obviously with the diet, we try to keep it as balanced as we can,” Guy says.
“Jules talks a lot about leading by example as parents. You can install whatever you want, you can tell your kids that having a bad temper and getting angry isn’t the way to solve things but if you’re constantly road raging and crying on like a clown, you can’t expect them to learn the lesson.
“So I think the same goes with them seeing how health focused we are and we think obviously it’s really important doing that.”
