Smooth Moves: A Guide To All Things Epilators

Ditch the fuzz for good.

As much as we love our self-care routine’s there is perhaps one step we would love to skip out of immediately: hair removal.

It’s time-consuming, sometimes painful and downright annoying to get done on a regular basis. But what if we told you it doesn’t have to be?

If you’ve yet to try epilators, they may just be the answer to all of your hair removal woes, and we’ve done all the research you could need to get started.

What is an epilator?

An epilator is a nifty little gadget for hair removal that works by grasping and pulling out hair from the root. It essentially works like a bunch of tiny tweezers working together to leave your skin smooth and hair-free for weeks as opposed to regular shaving. These devices come in various types, including corded, cordless, and wet/dry models, and are great for removing hair from areas like the legs, arms, underarms, and bikini lines.

How do you use an epilator?

Using an epilator is absolutely beginner-friendly. Follow the easy steps below and you’ll be hair-free and smooth for weeks.

  1. Start by exfoliating the skin to remove any dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.
  2. Hold the epilator at a 90-degree ankle to the skin and slowly move against the direction of the hair growth.
  3. Make sure to keep the skin taut with your free hand to make the process easier and more comfortable.
  4. Make sure to pop on some hydrating and nourishing moisturiser (aloe vera is a great option too) to soothe the skin and calm redness or irritation.

Make sure to follow the instructions provided by your epilator to ensure you get the best results.

Is ceramic or metal epilator better?

Ceramic heads are gentler on the skin and more durable, making them suitable for sensitive skin. Metal heads are more effective at gripping and removing hairs, especially shorter ones, providing a more precise and efficient epilation experience.

What is the difference between epilators and IPL?

Epilators and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices are both used for hair removal but work in different ways.

Epilators are devices that use rotating discs or tweezers to pluck hairs from the root. They provide long-lasting results similar to waxing but can be used at home. Epilation can be more painful than shaving but offers longer-lasting smoothness, as it removes hairs from the root.

IPL devices, on the other hand, use pulses of light to target and heat the hair follicles, which can inhibit future hair growth. IPL is less painful than epilation but typically requires multiple sessions to achieve long-lasting results. IPL is also less effective on light or fine hair compared to darker, coarser hair.
