Summer or winter, doesn’t matter what the season, your lips need looking after.
Finding the best lip balm can be a full time job (but even more frustrating). Once you discover one you love, you tend to stick with it. So, if you’re not happy with your current choice or are seeking some new options, read on and check out the best lip balms for all budgets.
#10 Body Shop Wild Argan Oil Solid Lips
RRP: $10
Made with Argan oil, this tin of solid lip balm has a sweet scent that was described by one reviewer as smelling like a scented candle. Great for keeping in your bag for a quick swipe of on-the-go moisture.
One reviewer on beautyheaven said, “I love this balm. It doesn’t dry out your lips after it has worn off.” Another said, “This oil was great when used on my lips while they were already hydrated and normal. However, it isn’t great when lips are dry or cracked”
#9 Nimue Hydro Lip Therapy
RRP: $26
OK so you might not have heard of Nimue but this professional derma-cosmeceutical brand (that was first created for post-operative care) has a lip balm and it’s pretty good.
This silver bullet of moisture is expensive compared to most high street options but wouldn’t look amiss in Katy Perry’s handbag, so if you’re after a glam lip balm with scientifically proved hydration, Nimue is for you.
#8 Carmex Watermelon Lip Balm
RRP: $5.99
Every Australian teenager knows (and loves) the umistakable tiny pot, the swirl of the finger in the shiny paste and the signature tingle that comes from the menthol and camphor in Carmex.
Last year’s limited edition Unicorn Sugar Plum was a huge hit, and this year they’re getting fruity with Watermelon. You don’t need me to tell you this stuff works and with added SPF15 you definitely want it in your beach bag this summer.
#7 Evolution of Smooth
RRP: $5.75
These super-moisturising lip balms have taken the US by storm and it’s easy to see why. They contain 100% pure organic ingredients, sustainably-sourced shea butter, oils and beeswax, and come in the totally cutest recyclable balls of colour, ever.
The flavour selection is wild, think: Strawberry Sorbet, Vanilla Cream or the new Cranberry Pear just in time for Christmas. All EOS lip balms are dermatologist tested and free from parabens, petroleum and gluten.
EOS don’t ship to Australia (yet) but you can find it in Costco, some of the larger Chemist Warehouse, or the whole range is available online at Skincare Australia.
#6 Nivea Original Care Lip Balm
RRP: $3.98
One of the great things about Nivea Original Care lip balm – as well as its amazing hydration – is that you can buy it pretty much anywhere. You run out? There’ll be a service station or late night pharmacy open and bingo. Hand over $4 and soft lips will be yours once again.
One reviewer says, “I have been pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoy using this lip balm. It smells pleasant and is not overpowering or strong at all, and it doesn’t have a yucky taste like many balms do. It does a great job of hydrating my lips, and they feel nice for hours afterwards.”
#5 La Mer The Lip Balm
RRP: $95
One of the key ingredients in La Mer’s bestselling lip balm is Miracle Broth which contains a blend of sea kelp, calcium, magnesium, potassium, lecithin, iron, Vitamins, C, E and B12, plus oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower which all work fabulously to keep those lips pillowy soft.
What’s not to love… maybe the price…?
A reviewer on mecca.com.au sums it up: “No, you don’t need a $95 lip balm. Nobody does. But when you get that pleasant little mood boost from using an ultra-luxe product (that actually does work supremely well), sometimes you can justify the odd extortionate purchase here and there! It is a beautiful, silky lip balm and while it won’t change your life, this luxurious little dose of “treat yoself” certainly does make the likes of a foul day at work hurt significantly less.”
#4 Blistex Lip Conditioner
RRP: $4.95
This little pot of joy gets consistently great reviews no matter where you look. Collagen, cocoa butter, vitamin E with an SPF 15 are what make this one of Australia’s most popular lip balms. It’s non greasy but adds a bit of shine to your otherwise dry lips. Soothing and cooling, Blistex is one of those keep-going-back-for-more lip balms.
A reviewer on beautyheaven.com.au says: “Lover of this lip balm and it saves me in the winter days when I just can’t keep my lips hydrated and when they are constantly cracked but when I have this on me it saves my life and keeps them feeling hydrated for ages.”
#3 Olieve & Olie Vanilla Lip Balm
RRP: $13.95
This amazing Vanilla Lip Balm, made from organic butters, oils, vitamin E and beeswax ticks all the boxes, but the best thing? It doubles up as an eye cream. Hand made in small batches, this delightfully scented balm will take care of dry and chapped lips and is palm oil free.
A reviewer on biome.com.au says, “I have been a self confessed lip balm junkie for over 30 years and have tried everything but since discovering Olieve use nothing else.” Another said, “Long lasting. Non greasy feel – nice and smooth. Smells nice but still suitable for the whole family.”
# 2 Vaseline Lip Therapy
RRP: $4.99
Suffering from chapped lips? Say hello to Vaseline’s new Lip Therapy in a tin. Rosy Lips is great because it adds a subtle tint of rouge but still has the classic glide-on-like-velvet Vaseline formula. The retro-style tins have been a long-term favourite in the UK, and have been adapted for the Aussie climate, so it won’t melt in your bag while you hit the waves.
A makeupalley reviewer says: “I use this every morning and night. It really does give your lips a rosy glow and makes them soft. I like to use this on my cheeks too. So I put a small amount on my fingers and get it warm then tap on to your cheeks. It makes them a soft pink colour and makes your skin look dewy.”
#1 Burt’s Bees Strawberry Lip Balm
RRP: $6.95
Say goodbye to dry, peeling lips and hello to all-natural, not tested on animals, strawberry flavoured Burt’s Bees lip balm. This tint-free lip balm leaves a matt finish which means you can apply lipstick straight over the top and it won’t bleed.
It contains all natural ingredients – including natural strawberry flavour, so if you’re allergic to strawbs, you’re better off sticking to one of the others flavours, of which there are many: Cucumber Mint, Wild Cherry, Grapefruit and Mango to name a few.
A beautycrew.com.au member rates it highly, saying, “This is a fun lip balm to use. I love the amazing natural strawberry scent, so sweet and fruity. It goes on clear so you can use it under your favourite lipstick … This lip balm would last for hours after applying and I usually only need to re-apply after eating.”
Thanks to its natural ingredients, selection of flavours and awesome hydration, Burt’s Bees Strawberry Lip Balm is the best lip balm in Australia.
