Henna Eyebrow Tint: What is it?

What you need to know before getting your brows done with henna.

What is a Henna Eyebrow Tint?

An Australian beauty trend that has staying power, henna eyebrow tints are a semi-permanent  form of eyebrow tinting using natural henna dye to stain the skin as well as the brow hairs which gives the illusion of depth and fullness in the brow area.

The process is very similar to traditional henna colouring methods that you may have seen in Indian culture, but the brow henna shades are formulated specifically for eyebrow tones.  Everyone is talking about the lasting results you can achieve with natural ingredients, which is far less terrifying than microblading.

What is henna?

Brow henna is a natural plant pigment which has been used for body art since Ancient Egyptian times.  Normally, you will buy it in powder form, and apply to the desired area after you have mixed it into a paste.  Henna is a completely natural product which is rising in popularity in Australia as more people look for a natural alternative.

How long does henna last on eyebrows?

Henna brows can last anywhere from four days to three weeks.  The length of time henna tinting lasts differs from person to person, and is dependent on how your skin reacts to the ink. Best results are on dryer complexions, henna stains the skin as well as dying the eyebrow hairs.

How much does it cost?

As with any brow treatment the cost will vary depending on your location and the salon you choose. Below are some options to check out.

How to DIY?

Henna only lasts for a few weeks and regular tinting is required.  If you can’t afford to go to the salon for a brow tint every few weeks, doing your own henna tint is an option

Henna is easy and cheap to buy. If you have sensitive skin types I would recommend doing a patch test at least 48 hours before you do your brow tint. Try and choose a colour that is close to your natural hair colour.

Make sure you mix up your henna well in advance so the lawsome has time to activate.  Ideally it should be left overnight, but you can get away with one hour.

Below are some basic guidelines for DIY henna brows.

Before you start, this is what you need:

  • About 1 tablespoon of henna powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • Plastic wrap
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Mascara Brush or cotton swab
  • Petroleum jelly/shea butter
  • Small glass bowl & lid.

Guide to DIY Henna application:

Mix up your Henna

In your small glass bowl, mix henna powder and lemon juice to form a paste with a thick consistency, no air bubbles and no lumps.  Cover and leave overnight. If you are in a hurry you can rest for a minimum of one hour, but the stain may not have the desired depth of colour.

Prepare your brows

Remove makeup and dirt from brows by wiping with an alcohol wipe.  Wait a couple of minutes, then apply petroleum jelly/shea butter around your brows to avoid staining unwanted areas.

Henna application

Apply henna mixture to your eyebrows using cotton swap/mascara brush.  Cover the area with plastic wrap and sit for 20 minutes or till it starts to flake.  The longer you wait, the deeper the stain will be.

How to make your henna brow tint last longer

Once your paste has dried, apply a mixture of sugar and lemon juice to release more dye for a more intense colour

After your brow tint try to avoid going outside for a couple of days.  Avoiding the sun and free radicals protects the colour and stain.

Do not wash the area for at least 12 hours, do not use any harsh cleaners/exfoliators after henna applications.  Protect and moisturise the area with coconut or shea butter.
